Members of the Board:
Can anyone post a photo of any PT boat at all that is undergoing a commissioning ceremony? Were the early boats commissioned at Bayonne or New York or was it a mix? What did the two pennants mean on the mast? Were they always the same?
Thanks for your help.

Allan;
This is for ELCO squadrons ONLY!!! There are photos of the early boats commissioning, for example for RON 7 I think the commissioning boat was PT 131 at the ELCO plant, as per the photros of LCDR John Bulkeley and his father(who was an employee at ELCO) commisssioning PT 131, thus RON 7. All Early ELCO RONs had their ceromonies at the plant. However, you had changes in later squadrons, for instance, RON 12's functions were all conducted at the NYC Yacht club, and later RONs were commissioned in mass(with all boats present) at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Do you need some photos??
Take care,

This is for ELCO squadrons ONLY!!! There are photos of the early boats commissioning( 70', 77', and 80', but specifically for here 80' ELCO's), for example, for RON 7, I think the commissioning boat was PT 131 at the ELCO plant pier, as per the photos of LCDR John Bulkeley and his father(who was an employee at ELCO) commissioning PT 131, thus RON 7. RON 6's commissioning boat was PT 121, with Bulkeley again officiating, 1 month earlier. All Early ELCO RONs had their ceromonies at the plant. Here's the one pic that springs to mind for me because it is of Squadron 23's commissioning:
I'm pretty sure the caption in At Close Quarters put this in LA at Higgins Industries...but I'm at work right now, away from my copy.

Hi Allen,
First of all, not every PT Boat commissioning ceremony was an Elco Squadron. Any tradition of presenting Squadron pennants would have been common to both Higgins and Elco and Huckins Squadrons. Here are Comm Ceremonies "en mass" for RONs 16, 39, 40 and 41. RON16 was at new Orleans and the others were at New York Navy Yard. (By the way, I've noticed the captured German S100- boat in the background of the RON40 ceremonies). I dont see any special pennants in any of these photos. Perhaps those pennants you are referring to in early Elco Squadrons were made by Elco and were specific only to cermonies that took place at the Elco factory?. Jerry

Great pictures and many useful comments. However, my photo shows two rectangular and rigid "flags", each two-colored, hoisted on the mast and a triangular pennant at the very top with embroidered writing of some kind. I don't see a commissioning pennant at the top- perhaps too early in the ceremony. I e-mailed the photo to Ted; perhaps he will post it here. It appears to be a commissioning ceremony and is stamped on the back as taken by Elco at Bayonne and dated July, 1942. I recognize Ens. Bruno, ExO of the 122 boat. It serves as a good Div 17 photo, but I need to be certain as to the event that it depicts. I can't imagine that it is anything but a commissioning ceremony.

Regarding Jerry’s picture entitled “ Ron 41 New York LCDR Van Buskirk”, does anyone have information on the boat in the background?
