Hello shipmates,
I recently was looking at this familiar photo of the damage on PT167 after it was hit by the flying torpedo and started wondering...What is that laying on the deck? It is definitely not the front of the charthouse. I can see a ladder and 2 open hatches. I was hoping somebody could shed some light on the subject. Maybe it is the engine room hatch? Or possibly the Day Room Canopy? Look for yourself and let me know your thoughts.
From another angle
Now here are some pics I found of PT364 after their dayroom canopy had been blasted up by the starboard gas tank got hit by a Jap 20mm cannon shell. I cant believe it did not explode the whole boat! So I guess the dayroom canopy was removable. Photos thanks to Ken Morris and his family. Jerry

Jerry,
Great question regarding the PT 167, I had wondered the same thing many times.
As for the dayroom cover, it was removable to allow for access to the fuel tanks.

The object on 167 is the engineroom hatch. You can see the early "doghouse" style access hatch open.

Jerry;
Al is correct, that is the engine room hatch.
Take care,

Thanks you guys! I have always thought that was just a strange camo design on the charthouse, but then I never really looked at the photo too closely, to notice the deck beams on the underside of the hatch. Funny what tricks my mind plays sometimes! Jerry

Wow, I had to look at that for a while before I could see what it was.
Thanks for sharing

The white undersides of the engine room cover on the deck of the torpedo-damaged 167 always fooled my eye when I would look at the (first, widely-published) photo, until I would catch sight of the flipped-up hatch at the top -- then I would remember what it was.
