This was posted on facebook. Thought I'd pass it on:
Greetings Splinters,
Splinters always ask, “What can we do to help preserve the history of what the PT Boaters accomplished?”
Your opportunity is here. I have a proposal for Splinters. Take this on as your project.
Don Shannon, our PT curator in Fall River, came across a nearly--once--in--a--blue--moon chance. He found four original WWII PT Boat, Mark 9, .50-caliber machinegun cradles. Don told me, "After 18 years of searching the United States Navy and Army surplus depots, as well as private collectors, that this is the first complete set of cradles to show up." They were found in Greece.
As part of our charter, and as a museum, we must present the correct history of the boats and their accomplishments. Our boats should be as complete as we can make them. We only have one real gun cradle that Don put together from parts and pieces. The other mounts on the boats are temporary shelves until we could find originals.
The gun cradles are in very good condition (still in the cosmoline protective coating) and priced at a fair market value of $3500 per cradle (plus shipping). Total cost -- $15,000.
I challenge Splinters: Make the .50-caliber gun cradle project yours. We need to raise the funds to cover the costs of these cradles.
$15,000 may sound like a lot, but spread over the group, it is not much per person. We have over 400 splinters on our mailing list. Children and grandchildren, Get Involved!
I am throwing in the first $100.
Come on, Splinters! Let’s not let this opportunity slip through our fingers. Send your tax-deductable donations to PT Boats, Inc. Indicate in the memo portion of the check that it is for the Gun Cradles.
Sincerely,
Charlie Jones

P.S.: Here's your chance. Show our PT veterans that we can do this! To boost this worthy cause, if you send, $200 or more, I'll send you an autographed copy of my book about MTBSTC, the PT training base at Melville.

Hey Charlie - is that offer posted still valid? I've been slow to pick up your book and I'd be happy to kill two birds with one $200 stone.

Oh, by the way, even though this effort was aimed at the Splinters (those who are offspring of PT Boaters), it is not exclusive to Splinters. Even if you are not a splinter, you can donate to this worthy cause.
Thanks.

This book is well worth the price guys. Even if you do not spend the money for the Splinter challenge, buy the book. I have had mine for some time now, and it is a wonderful insight into the MTBSTC. Just a treasure trove of information, pictures, and color shots of artifacts. Charlie has done an incredible job doing research for this book, so take it from me guys, add this one to your Library................
