On Amazon I saw listed a Dumas PT 212 Model Boat kit. !/30 scale. I never heard you guys mention anything about this kit. The picture looks like it doesn't have much armament. Being a Higgins crewman I was interested. What's your opinion?

From a scale standpoint, it's crap, worse than the Lindberg ELCO. I bought one last year for a good price just to see what was there. The hull and superstructure are vacuuformed plastic, so what should be sharp edges are round. The hull shape is vaguely correct, but needs some shaping to get right, The deck is cheap poplar plywood. The scale is 1/31, which is a mongrel scale in which no one makes aftermarket parts. There is one sheet of laser-cut wood with some torpedo tube parts (wrong shapes) and a few others. They give you some dowels and strip wood for the tubes. The fittings are crude and iincorrectly shaped, etc.

I agree that the most difficult issue is the scale. It is why I eventually had to go into scratch-built mode on the PT-157 model (which in retrospect was quite an adventure however it took nearly 6-years to complete). Unless you got tons-o-time find a model with standard scale support for aftermarket pieces.

Hi CJ,
I bought this kit last December and still have to work up the courage to start building it. I am not the most skilled model builder, but I did build the PT596 last year. I can bring the opened kit for you to look at when you come visit next week if you are interested. I am planning to purchase after market Roll Off Racks and Mk13 torpedoes for it and also mount an aftermarket 40mm and maybe a 37mm cannon onto the model as well. Like Al said: there are problems with the model, but compared to the 1/200 scale Revell Higgins PT212, it is a masterpiece! Jerry

Al, Bridge and Jerry: Thanks for the info. I certainly am no skilled modeler either so am not sure I would want to tackle building one of these Dumas. Jerry I will discuss it further with you next week when in Portland. I would just like a bigger Higgins model than the little 9 inch long one. I did assemble the Elco PT 596 last year.

If your looking to do a model of your boat, I would suggest (providing you can afford it) have one scratch built. You can choose whatever scale you wish, and add whatever parts you want. I would keep it at least 1/32 scale. Not a huge model, but one that really looks nice, and catches the eye. My 1/32 scale scratch PT-10 is a real beauty, but is not so big that you can't find room for it. I would also suggest buying or having a case made for the model. All of my models have cases, and this not only protects the model, but keeps out 98% of the dust. As everyone knows, there is nothing worse then trying to keep a model dust free without a case. I learned this a long time ago, so anything I have built, has a case. There are many model builders on this message board that might help you out on your model. I know if I had the talent, I would build you one for your Home, Office, or Den........

The Dumas PT-212 is easy to build, but I would agree that it's not much better than the Lindberg when it comes to details and accuracy.
I have loaded some pics of my friends recent build.
Dave
