The log books are great, And the problem of log books is that the Archives does not have every log book from commissioning to decomissioning for every boat, nor from every Squadron. There are many holes. Unfortunatley, those they currently don't have, are lost to history.

Hi Charlie!
Yes you are correct again. I was kind of disappointed when I could not find the complete sets of logbooks for several boats. I felt lucky to have been able to find what I did. Some PT Boats logbooks were completely missing. Such as PT323 (I think). Must have been destroyed with the boat. But overall, the vast majority (guessing 75%) are available in the Archives. So in my opinion it was worth going to look. Jerry

Jerry,
Herbert Stadler was my my Dad's Uncle. He's now burried in Newark NJ after the Family had him returned Stateside in '45. I'm interested in learning as much about him while some of his shipmates are around. How do I find out what Ships he might have been on and the ports he set foot in? Was he on the 323 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf? No one in my Family knows the whole story and I want to piece it together.
Best regards,
Jeff Hirsch

Jeff,
I was able to find 2 photos I took of the PT323 Deck Log from 30 June 1944. It does not list Mr Stadler as being reported aboard yet. Unfortunately, one of our original PT Boat veterans at Save the PT Boat Dick Lowe, who served with Mr Stadler when she was hit by the Kamikaze on Dec 10, 1944 has just recently "taken his last patrol" Back in 2005 at the Spokane Reunion, I met one of Dicks shipmates, who was in the engine room when the boat was hit. I cant recall his last name but he may still be around. Here are some photos I have related to the subject of PT323. Jerry

Len,
This photo, (reversed), is of what I think was an award ceremony has the CO of PT 508, Liet. C.R. Whorton. The officer in Blues in the middle of the line, 6th from the end.
If more of the crew of PT 508 are shown, could your father be in the picture?? I think this picture would have been taken in Portland England.
