Trying to locate my Father in the Pacific. Charles Howard Griffin, PT Boat mechanic. Boat 450 of RON 30, Boat 508 of RON 34, RON 4 and RON 23. He was at Base 17 at least once. Trying to find his boats. He was at D-Day. I have his 201, discharge paper and medical file.
Any RON rosters out there? Thanks

I have a couple of pictures of the 508 (which you may have - one shows Charles Griffin in a .50-cal. turret). If you don't, give me your email and I'll send you a copy.

Len,
I've not found rosters, or log books for Ron 23 in the Archives, yet. My father finished his PT career on PT 286 in Ron 23. I do have some photos, but don't know who any of the men are.
Can you post a photo of your father ?

Len,
USN Muster reports are available through Ancestry.com. You can tell when people came and and left but it does not ID what boats they were on.
For example, looks like he was with RON 30 upon comissioning 2-15-44.
THen it looks like he went to MTB RON 34 on 4-27-44, he came from MTBSTC.

Hi Len,
Charlie is correct. Additionally, I recently went to the National Archives II in College Park Maryland and researched several PT Boat Deck Logs. I was looking at different boats logbooks, and here is what I found. If you look in the front of each deck log book, there is a list of all the crewmen on board during the time covered, (for example a 3 month period) This crew list will have the names and when they reported aboard and then when they transferred off the boat. Then you can look on the page corresponding to that date and see the log entry for when the individual sailor transferred. I have a few examples for some of the boats that interested me. One was PT27, John Akins Boat, and the other example is PT235, Milt Donadts and Alvin Hansons Boat. Look at each pic and you will se what I mean. Jerry
The Cover of the Logbook for PT27, you can see the box with all the other deck logs for PT25, PT26 and PT27 all stored by date covered in that box on the table next to the book
PT27 Logbook Title Page
PT27 crew list shows John Akin dates
Other page of PT27 crew list shows Akin as lead gunner
PT27 transfer of old CO and New CO LT McElroy and Tobin
PT235 crew list in front of logbook page 1
PT235 crew list page 2
PT235 Milt Donadt reports aboard
PT235 Alvin Hanson transfers to shore base force

The history of Ron 34 by Russ Schuster has a muster roll for PT 508 (christened the Mairsey Doats, by the way) that shows your father reported there on 6/30/44 and detached 9/2/44. The 508 was in involved in some action in the Jersey Islands, including the battle that claimed PT 509 and all but one of her crew.
Hope this helps

Hi Jerry: The 235 roster is interesting to me. Edgar Lyon Williams (the last name on the list) and I went through boot camp (Co 43-91) and torpedo school at Keyport, WA together, then we were assigned to Ron 19 about the 1st of Nov, 1943 At that time he was assigned to the 236 but had to go to the hospital for sometime at Guadacanal. I don't know how he wound up on the 235 roster. Randolph N. Witt was a crewman on the 235. He was with me also in boot camp and torpedo school. I don't see his name on the roster. I have a group picture of the 235 crew and he is in the picture.

Hi CJ,
Looking forward to seeing you later this month. Your shipmate may have been on the PT235 log, just not for this 3 month period! This book only covers a short time, and maybe the next one would have his name listed if he reported aboard after the time period this one logbook covers. As an example, the PT27 logbook cover page shows the time period that is covered for that particular log book, which is between 01April44 to 30 June44. If he reported aboard after that timeframe his name would not be in that particular book.

Yes Jerry, Randy and I plan to see you early August 20th if the 658 is still on "go".

C.J.
I hope you take plenty of photos that day. What I wouldn't give to see your face when you board the 658 for the first time, hear those engines turn over, and watch her leave the dock. That my friend is what it's all about. One day when I rid my fear of flying, I can meet Jerry and the gang, and feel that same feeling you will.
