Hi everybody,
During my daughter's rare visit, she gave me a US Navy Recording Sextant Mark 1 Model O,
in a wooden box. Can someone tell me whether it was carried on PT boat for navigational purpose. Is there still an instruction manual for it available?

I missed that first thread which answered the question. My grandfather told me about using the various navigation tools in the Navy but never mentioned specifically though about using them on a PT. I know for sure, however, that he was issued one as a QM. He talked more about radar being used to plot specific locations while running in the Med.

I did find one picture of him posing with a sextant; the background and clothing suggests post-war USNR use though.

Thanks Jeff for your link. I guess this question was asked before with no definite conclusion.
My sextant is much heavy and complicated than Stanton's grandfather's. It came with two
scopes (I think one for day and one for night) It weights a ton and stores in heavy wooden
box. I guess it was used on a destroyer or larger ship unless some one can prove otherwise.
It was made by Mergenthalen Lino Co. of Brooklyn, NY. It was listed on Ebay for $450.

Victor,
Someone asked about a manual for your sextant at askville and got this response a while back that they thought there was one at the Mariners' Museum. May want to check with them on availability of getting a copy.
