Anyone read NEPTUNE'S INFERNO? Just searching through the index, looks like a bunch of entries for PTs off Guadalcanal....

A good friend of mine just got the book and is reading it now...I told him to keep me in mind for PT mentions (and the book when he is done!)

Interesting section in the book discussing whether the 48 boat did or did not fire a spread of torpedoes at the damaged USS PORTLAND on the night of 13 November, 1942 off Tulagi.

Will;
Yes, unfortunatly, Tom Kendall fired the spread, thinking Portland was an enemy ship. Thankfully, they all missed!
Take care,
TED

Ted: Some questions after the fact about why the incident did not make it into the official reports. Even AT CLOSE QUARTERS doesn't mention it.

I don't know, but it is in the 48's log book and it is also in Jack Searles personal Tulagi log that he used for "Tales off Tulagi". So naturally it is entered in my history of the boat.
Take care,

Ted - OH, I think for sure that it happened. Those were dangerous times and confusing tactical situations....

Will;
You are correct, it was very dangerous out there. The night Tom Kendall fired on Portland, she was off Sing Song Island.
Another one you won't read anywhere else is that on the night of Jan 1-2 1943, Les Gamble and Sid Rabekoff in PT 45 fired two torpedoes by accident at the New Zealand Corvette Kiwi(AKA: SMOKEY JOE), which they mistook for a Japanese ship, again, fortunatly the two torpedoes missed. After this incident Les Gamble and Kiwi's Skipper, Lt. Cmdr. Gordon Britson RNZNVR , became life long friends.
Take care,
TED
