My father served on a PT boat in New Guinea in '44-'45. His name is John Mooney, he was a Chief Boatswains Mate

Dave:
I have a nice photo of a guy named "Mooney" but no first name and no details. The photo was taken at Tufi, an advance base in New Guinea. Send me your e-mail address and I'll send the photo to you. It is of good quality and you will know if it is of your dad or not.

Dave:
My research for a book that I'm working on tells me the following:
Mooney, John Benedict, BM2/c assigned to the Base Force aboard the tender USS Hilo on 12/02/42 and was moved (transferred) to the Base Force at AdBase Tufi on 1/03/43. That's all I have. Perhaps others can add to this.
Good luck.

Thanks Allan, that's great. Any idea how to find out which boat he was on?
My attemp at posting his picture did not work as you can see, I thought maybe someone would reconize him.
Thanks for your help,
Dave

Dave:
It would seem by the two assignments listed that your Dad was assigned to the base force and not to a particular boat. Of course, that might have changed as time moved on. But, from the known data, it seems that he was assigned to the maintenance side of PT's, generally.
I would have posted the photo myself but I have no luck at that, either.

Well I've found more info on my Dad, John B. Mooney BM1C
He finished training in R.I. in Aug. of '42, his C.O. was D.J. Walsh
He was with Ron 6 in Jan. '43, his C.O. was E.M. Erikson.
He was with Ron 8 in Nov. '43.
Hopefully someone may have some info for me
Thanks,
Dave

Interesting detail to note on the placement of the depth charge cradle on the boat in the photo -- it seems to be placed over the toe rail, not in a bare section of deck where the railing has been specifically cut out for that purpose.

You're right Drew. Almost like something that was maybe only mounted occasionally.
