I'm researching for a book focused on WW2 SWPA.
The books title will focus on RABAUL, but subjects will also cover Truk, Kavieng, and the Solomons (incl Bougainville, Shortlands and Guadalcanal).

I am keen to include multiple pages of text, and 2/3 images with PT Boats preferably depicting an event / action with a common link to Australia, or New Zealand. This link could be a ship, aircraft, or service personnel from Oz or NZ,
maybe a coastwatcher, or downed aircraft crew recovery ?

Any information regarding PT Boat activity close to Rabaul is keenly sought, also re Japanese tunnels, and the "Submarine Base" at Tavui Point

Any assistance with ideas for an artwork (could be one in full colour, and another pencil sketch) will be much appreciated. My book will be showcasing the artwork of a mate - a top Australian Military artist.

AT CLOSE QUARTERS, which is a general operational history of PT boats in WWII, can be read online at http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/CloseQuarters/index.html

You should be able to find some useful information for your project in the book.

Thanks for your response Al,

I have visited that website some time ago, but I'll certainly have another look.

I was hoping that some of your members may come up with a factual scenario that could fit within my criteria ( eg: maybe a PT Boat with an RAAF Catalina in frame, or PT Boats in company with HMAS Hobart, or Canberra ?? etc )

If somebody comes up with a great idea, and assists with the factual background information to enable an historically accurate artwork I would be happy to provide 2 quality art prints (one to the Museum of choice, and one for the contributor) once the artwork is complete.

Here's a link to a Schnell Boot artwork:
www.navart.com.au/Artwork/Originals/S037xx-OBERSEE-SCHNELL-BOOTS
That particular original has actually been sold very recently. The artwork on this site will give you an idea of the amazing quality of the work of Randall Wilson (he will be illustrating my Rabaul book)

Your MessageBoard is amazing - I've been wading back through the posts, obviously a focus on Model Building, but heaps of interesting stories too. Randall is also a top scratch builder - I must put some of his work up on the Navart website.

Regards ... Ash

Hi Ash,
Go back to page 4 in the past pages at the bottom of the headings page and you will find a topic "Need to contact crewman Ron11 / Ron 18 PT178 and PT 364 " by Jerry Gilmartin.
This for the time was Quite a feat and involved our Z Force with the American Pt Boats, this could make for a rather interesting subject for your book.
Then there is the story of HMAS Kapunda working with 6 PT Boats to accept a certain Japanese Generals surrender who when asked to report to the corvette said he was ill desposed to do so but arrived post haste when it was made clear to him that he had little choice in the matter.
Hope they help a little.

Hi David,

Thanks for your info, both great storylines but unfortunately not within the geographical confines of my book (focused on Rabaul / SWPA).
