Hello everyone-

I have a question regarding the RON-10 boats! I'm getting my radio controlled 169 PT ready for the frist srping R/C regatta and I had to replace one of the rudders which got sheared off at our last regatta.
It was a son of a gun as I had to pry the deck off but I got the new rudder in.

OK, here goes! My 169 currently has a gray deck! That's what I was told by my neighbor Bruce Hainsbury who served on the 169 as a torpedoman. Now I'm starting to wonder, was it gray or OD green.

With all the shots I have of the RON 10 zebras, they are all black and white to begin with. Can anyone shed light onto this? I need to know before I reassemble the model! Were the RON 10 boat deck gray, green or a mix of both?? Thanks for any and all replys, guys!

I monitor this site weekly but rarely contribute. Your interest about RON10 caught my attention. My dad was on the 164 (RON 10) when it was destroyed by a bomb while at the dock on 8-1-43. The 117 was also damaged at the same time. I know many of you have seen the photos of that boat. Anyways I have no answers to your questions regarding colors,etc. My dad passed away 8-2-78 and to this day still has hardware (he always thought it was bullet fragments) in his left leg that the doctors felt it was better to leave them instead of dig them out. Well I guess they were right. Just had to throw that in tonight.

Well, Frank, you've opened a can of worms... The two official deck colors in use at the time were 20-B (Deck Blue) and 20-G (Deck Green).
These are taken from WEM's color matched chips. The actual chips are darker than they appear on my screen and probably yours. However, you can get a feeling for the basic shades.

According to David Swasey, a camoufleur at ELCO, the RON 10 boats had the white replaced with a light yellowish green (no specific name like Pale Green [5-PG] given). They were transported to the Pacific in the modified Adaptor (Zebra) scheme. So, because this scheme was applied Stateside, the probability is they played by the rules. When the boats were repainted some shade of green (MTB, TROPICAL, NAVY [5-NG], homebrew, etc??) in the Pacific, they may or may not have. Unless you can come up with a deck log stating the actual color used, we may never know for sure.

Given the base color (green) of both schemes, it seems reasonable to suggest that the decks were probably green, as well. Your neighbor remembers gray. You choose...

Frank;
Green is what I have always thought. when the black and white adapter pattern proved to be "less than desirable" I have read that the white was painted over with a greenish/yellow, this is why in some "in" theatre photos the RON 10 boats look like there white stripes are dirty. with this said I feel this was only a last resort effort to keep the scheme around a few weeks longer. In some photos you will see the cabin and deck are dark but one solid color, this i believe is Navy Green, because by Jan 1944 all RON 10 boats were painted Navy Green.
As Mike referenced his Dad's Boat, PT 164 which was bombed 1 August 1943, look at that photo. The hull and the SCR 517 radar cover has the "dirty" stripes and the deck, tubes and cabin are all one color, so they were transitioning to the more typical paint scheme already Look at the photos I posted in the photobucket account, mainly of PT 167, by Nov 5, 1943 she has the dark green deck, cabin and the "dirty" stripes too. By 22 Jan 1944, she is all dark Green(Navy Green).
I know you love those stripes Frank, but once RON 10 got out to the Solomons in late May 1943, the stripes probably lasted until early December 1943, when the last boat hit the drydock at Tulagi, Rendova or Green Island. I wonder if C.J remembers these boats at Green with him?
Hope this helps.
Take care,

Hi Frank and Ted and Al,
Speaking of PT167, look at what I just found! I was going through some our our archived photos and found this and I believe this is a close up of PT167 ted Berlins after it got hit by the Jap torpedo. Look at this picture and let me know what you think? I like the 3 guys looking out from inside the boat. Is it possible this might be a different PT zebra striped boat with battle damage and NOT PT167? The background looks european sort of? Jerry

Jerry;
That is PT 167, the photo was probably taken on 5 Nov 1943, the same day as my photo that I posted in the photobucket account.

Hey guys-

Thanks for all your input! Al, I just knew you had something to add as well as the color swatches, FANTASTIC!!

Right now I'm on the fence guys. It's gonna be a son of a gun to strip down all the deck area and remove everything from my 169 old Lindberg PT109 kit to re-paint her in the new green deck color.

The model is over 25 years old and ya know, it was the only PT model we modelers had at thit time frame that resembled an ELCO. That model by Lindberg in 1/32 scale is far from perfect and took a long time to get right.

I'm still saving my pennies for the day Italerie comes out (hopefully) with an early class 103 ELCO. I'm hoping like everybody else is!

As for now, I'm going to leave the 169 deck green and certainly save this reply for future refference when I re do the 169 sometime in the near future with a better kit!

Thanks guys!

Let me correct by saying that I'm going to leave the current color "GRAY" on the top deck 169 model and not green as I had stated in the post. I'm going to leave her be with the gray deck. It was built for my godd friend and ex- neighbor and PT boat veteran Bruce Hainsbury as a remembrance to him. That's the way Bruce remembered it- so be it! God bless ya Bruce!
