Hello,

For any of the Vets who are on here who did go through Melville; or for Charlie Jones for that matter.

That first orientation ride you went on as students at the MTBSTC - afterwards, did you have the rest of the day off or did you have classes?

Also, at what point during the course did you get to have Mixers or dances?

If you don't have my email address, you can get it from Dick, Charlie, Alex, Frank Andruss or Frank R., thank you.

Garth

PS: Dick, ... please email me as well - I need to ask you a question off site.

As quoted in the Officers Reporting for Training at the MTBSTC, there is a section that says No leave granted except in cases of extreme emergencies. This equally applies to absence during School Hours. Shore Leave will normally be granted from 1600, Saturday until 0655 Monday for Officers not in the duty section.

For permission to leave the Island of Newport ( Aquidnneck Island) see the Executive Officer or the Senior Instructor. This request is 40 mile pass, and will normally be granted. Night classes will be held each week as assigned.

CLUBS
We are fortunate in having an Officer's club on the base which all student Officers are invited to visit. Mixed drinks are sold at the bar and bottled goods are sold for consumption away from the club. There is an Officers club in Newport on Red Croos Avenue. The charge at this club is $2.00 per month and free dances are held each Saturday night. Only mixed drinks are sold.

Newport Country Club- Through the courtesy of the Newport Country Club, the facilities of it's golf course are offered to men in the Armed Forces and their families, at $1.00 per person, except on Saturday and Sunday during the months of July and August, when the charge will be $2.00 per day. At no time will Officers (during the School week) attend Movies, USO Shows, or Base Entertainments, or frequent the Officers Club. Watches will not be swapped. Officers having stand by duty are on a duty status the same as those standing watch,

I know this doesn't answer all of your questions, because I could not find anything in the original MTBSTC write-ups about this. There is much more that I have that deal with many other issues for the New Officers...............

As far as parties or dances, I know that most classses (if not all) had a dance/party at the end of the course. There were other base sponsored dances for various shows that might come ing to entertain, or for whatever special occasion, like at holidays. The class itself was probalby too busy to organize anything on their own during the course except for the end of the course party (they only had 2 or 3 months of class). But they would have participated in the base parties, so there was probably no need to set up something else.

As far as the early familiarization rides, it was just an evolution in the daily schedule. Half the class would go out in the morning and the other half would go out in the afternoon. But other classes continued. They didn't have the time to give them the day off.

Thanks Frank and Charlie ...

Frank - could you possibly email me that stuff, please? Thanks.

Charlie, so, if I understand your response correctly; you're saying that once you got off the boat after the ride, you went to a class? Charlie, please email me offsite.

Thanks.

Garth
PS: For Dick W., please email me offsite - I need to ask you a question

Tim;
Yes if your FAM ride was in the morning. If it was in the afternoon, you were released for evening chow, then returned in the morning. It is still the same today.
Take care,
TED

Just a little bit of info, my father was assigned to the Fargo Building in Boston, dont know how long but Boston had a major fire in November 1942 ( Coconut Grove nightclub) nearly 500 died and many more were injured! My father and many others from Fargo were called to assist at the scene to provide manpower. After Fargo, he went to Melville RI for training.

I should correct myself, Fargo building is a Navy building close to downtown Boston, and he was probably finished with Melville at this time!
We are from Boston snd he may have been reporting to Fargo Bldg!
Navy was called in to assist with the dead and many more injured.

Actually, most PT boat student reported to the Fargo Building, officially the Navy Receiving Station, prior to reporting to Melville. They reported there while waiting for their class to start. Then they would be sent down to Melville as a group.
