I'm a new member and I'm trying to do some research on PT 114.

A friends Grandfather served in RON 8 in New Guinea during WW 2, and as kids he would tell us about serving on them. 114`s name was "Bucaneer" and he mentioned an Ensign Dean who also was assigned to 114. He also said 114 was a very aggressive boat and as a result went aground at least 4 times, once being abandoned for 3 months as a result. He was quite insistant the 114 was in operation at the war`s end. Have done some research and am aware that groundings in enemy controlled waters was the #1 cause of losses, especially in the New Guinea area. 1 grounding took place on 5-2- 43, but don`t seem to be using the right "key words" to find any further info. Told my friend who isn`t computer savy (am barely myself) would try to find any information that can. Also, am sure she carried a 40mm Bofors on her stern, his Grandfather was usually a 20mm gunner on the bow. Can anyone help me find her decklog or info on the dates of her groundings? He wants to build a model of her for his son. The stories he told helped me decide to do 7 1/2 yrs in USN and 17 more in ARG.

Lowell: AT CLOSE QUARTERS, Cdr. Robert Bulkley's "bible" of PT operations, makes several references to the 114 boat, including a brief description her grounding on 5/2/43. She was indeed commanded at one point by Lt. Frank H. Dean, Jr.

The boat was also nicknamed SILVER DOLLAR at one point.

She did indeed serve until war's end. I have one photo of her in the process of being stripped prior to burning in the Philippines in October of 1945.

I found this photo among Alvin Hansens collection. He was stationed at Samar getting the boats ready for burning. You can see 114 on the stern. So it was indeed in operation by the end of WW2. Jerry Gilmartin PT658 Portland OR

Sir, unfortunately, no did not recieve the information you sent. Would greatly appreciate if you would try again. Must confess am not very good on a computer but am slowly improving.. My E mail is flakbait 1960@ aol.com. Have a couple of other questions; as far as you are aware, was the 114 camofladged at all? Did she ever pack 8 - 50 cals? Did the crews use 1880`s? British Admiralty charts as your "go to" maps? Lastly, he mentioned "depth charging" several Japanese landing barges and literally blowing 3- 4 of them to bits by slinging the rear of the 114 and "lobbing the "ash can" as he called it into their midst; would guess if true was a rather "unorthidox" form of attack!
