Although I was going to wait to tell you guys, we decided not to use the wonderful Quonset Hut that Stan Pienkowski had made for this project. The reason was it was just too big for the area we had to work with. Thanks to Frank Ryczek who has agreed to not only build us a wonderful Grass Shack Headquarters, but will be building an Engineering shack as well. I have enclosed the almost finished Headquarters that Frank is building. It is just beautiful, and will truly enhance our PT-374 Memorial project. I thought is was so awesome, I could not wait to post it.

Thank you for the kind words David-
After Frank Andruss and I had a phone conversation about the PT-374, I mentioned about the ramshackle shacks that I have on my Tulagi diorama and I told Frank A. that I can and would produce a shack for him for our project.
I'm a very frugal modeler on a very tight budget sooooooo I have to use whatever and make it work.
The palm tree uprights are actually bamboo skewers that I wrapped in masking tape, then crochet thread, then covered with a single sheet of tissue paper with Elmer's Glue Alll then given a black wash then drybrushed with light tan. This is the same method I use for my palm trees that will be seen on the PT-374 diorama.
The side panels are in reality a sea straw mat from the Dollar store! I treated one side with decopauge or a light mix of Elmer's and water and brushed it over one side. This method "locks" the threads together to keep the stuff from unraveling.
This whole shack cost me about two bucks in materials and a lot of time, but it was a lot of fun. I'm in the process of adding the stringers to the roof peak now. In fact, I purchased a roll up wooden dowel Roman Type shade at a garage sale for a buck. The dowels are about 1/16th of an inch in dia. This was a great find as I have enough stringers for 50 shacks at least.
More to come! Watch the board for upcoming pictures! Thanks again Dave!

Oh yeah, guys, I forgot to mention something about the jungle shack I built. The wrappings are actually "holding" the uprights and roof beams together. I did not use any glue at all to secure the main upright to the outside of the shack.
I then used a product called WEATHER-IT that magically ages wood in seconds. This stuff is fantastic! But it only works on raw wood. I even went over the the lashings. Glad you like it Dave!

Frank R is way ahead of schedule on the grasss shack and has finished it. I can't wait to see the photos, which I will post here. Frank is such a dedicated builder. He will now start our A-Frame Engine Shop, which I suspect will be just wonderful. Grass shack will be shipped to Alex Johnson and we will plan out where it will go on the board. Stay tuned for updates..........

Fey Frankie A.-
I'll have photos sent to you perhaps Wednesday evening after my model club meeting so that you then post them here on the ol' message board.
I still need to detail and paint the radio and add the radio mast, but that's no biggie.
Overall I think the shack looks pretty neat, BUT now it's up to you to make the final yeah or nay on the shack. I'd like to hear from the rest of the modelers on the board as well.
Hang in there Boss!

Frank;
That looks fantastic!!! I have been modeling for 35 years, and I can see I still have alot to learn from guys like you. As the movie in Wayne's World, I am dropping to my knees and chanting loudly "WE"RE NOT WORTHY!, WE"RE NOT WORTHY!".
Take care,

Hi ya Teddy-
I have learned a long time ago that when it comes to scale modeling-
"THERE ARE NO SECRETS"!!
I belong to two model clubs here in North Florida and I guess you and I are in the same boat and about the same age, but I've been modeling for about the same length of time. I just turned 63! Jeeeezzzzzzz!! Where does the time go!!
Anyway, I still think of myself as a novice at times. The guys in my model clubs are always coming in with new projects and new ideas. I read anything and everything I can about scale modeling and I love to try out new techniques and put my own "spin" on a technique. I guess that this is what keep me "in the groove"!
I have just added the roof to the grass headquarters shack! I have to admit, it came out kind of neat.
Ted, believe me when I say, I'm not the best scale modeler here on the board, but I try like heck to be! Thanks for the kind words too!

Frank;
I have always went the scratchbuilding way, ever since I read my first Shepard Paine "How to make Dioramas", I think my first one was the M3 Lee tank, because I still have the scar on my left index finger where I stabbed my self with a tile knife trying to cut the left access hatch open. That was Easter 1971, I think. So, as you know, I too have developed some of my own techniques, thats what is so great about modeling, two guys can do the same model but it will never turn out the same. We are from the same generation, but I just turned 47 in July, and I am stilll active duty Navy until 2014 at least. Have a great day my friend, and keep up the good work!
Take care,
TED

Hey guys-
I have just received a group of digital pictures from my good friend "UNK'L" Bill Bonner. I paid him a visit yesterday and he took some fantastic shots of my finished PT-374 HQ grass shack. I actually wanted to surprise my good buddy Frankie A. today because I told him he'd have to wait for the pictures.
Bill did a great job in setting the 'mood' for the finished model. He took some "dirt" from his flower garden and placed it onto of a piece of cardboard and then placed the model against a row of hedges. The finished images blew me away!
Frank A. will post these new images ASAP, I betcha! I just sent them to him!
Thanks for everyone's interest in this project! It won't be long before we can see a complete diorama. I'm very proud to have been a part of this diorama project. It was fun and historical, but hey, isn't that what scle modeling is all about anyway???
