Higgins developed a short tube for the MK13 torpedo and fitted it to PT295 and a few others. Like the MK19 before it, it used compressed air to launch the torpedo. Anyone know the MK number of this tube? It's identified on the Higgins plans as ...22.5 torpedo tube...

Al: Could those tubes have been used on the 139 and 141 boats in THEY WERE EXPENDABLE? I also seem to remember that some of the lend-lease Elcos bound for Russia had air-launched setups.

Haven't watched "They Were Expendable" in years, so I don't remember what they mounted. The Soviet ELCOs had the standard Higgins MK19 tube.

I just watched this movie this week doing my morning workout. I've seen a lot of old movies this way! I don't remember seeing anything like that in the movie. I only saw a lot of long tubes on Elcos. I know there's a Huckins boat in there but don't remember anything like that? I haven't returned the movie yet. Do you want me to give it a look Al, and if so what specifically would you be interested in about these tubes?

Hi Dave,
The only thing about these tubes I need to discover is the MARK number.

Okay, I had a look at the movie over breakfast in fast forward. Quite entertaining I might add. The short air launched tubes are there on at least one of the boats. Unfortunately they weren't listed in the credits Al. :-)

Yeah, I looked at TWE again last night, and the tubes definitely look like the ones shown here. My theory is that the 139 and 141 were rack-mounted by this time and that the tubes came from Higgins, since it was the closest source to the Florida shooting location. (Sorry, Al....I know this is getting off the subject of your original post.)

Hi Al,
I just noticed in this photo of the Higgins Hellcat, the torpedo tube is the same as the one you have the drawing of! I will look to see if I can find what mark number they were. Jerry PT658 Portland

Thanks Jerry,
Actually, that's a standard MK19 tube on the HELLCAT. Note the cradles and the curve in the compression chamber.
