PT 374 LIFE JACKETS

With our PT-374 Memorial project moving forward, Alex Johnson had asked me about using Life-Jackets on the boat. The only ones I knew that you could buy were from ROYAL MODELS, and those were high priced. Enter into the picture, Bridge Carney who is working his magic on that awesome PT-157 project

He had contacted me and asked me to send him some photo's of what the real Kapok's looked like and he would see how they would come out. Well, the enclosed photo's show how they came out, and I'm so very happy to say that we will now have Life-Jackets on our project. Thanks again to Bridge for his hard work on these jackets. They are in 1/35 scale and look great.

THANKS BRIDGE

Frank,

Below is a composite photo of the life jackets:

Hi there.

Those look really good. Do you think that Bridge would like to sell another 15 of them?

Cheers from Peter

Thanks Frank for the kind words and for posting this 'challenge' on the board a few weeks ago. It was a fun challenge. Everything to date I've done on the PT-157 model required adherence to precision and being exact however with the jackets you purposely try to make each one appear a little different from the other. That's quite a change!

My thought now is to test the process I used to put these together, by making a few more, and waiting for any recommended changes Frank may have once he looks these over. Then I'll publish it [in the near future] so anyone that wants to make these can do so.

Where are all the modelers and thier opinions on these Life Jackets. These are put up here in hopes that when the time comes, you too would like to have these 1/35 jackets on your project.

I did get the Kapoks that Bridge made for our PT-374 project and they are every bit as good as the photo indicates. They can be form fitted without the worry of breaking them. The extra long ties at the top of the collar area will make it very easy to tie them off to the grab rails, gun suppressor rails, or anywhere else on the boat. You simply snip off the extra strap piece and your ready to go. I will try and post a few photo's of Bridge's Kapoks after Alex attaches them to the boat. In closing, these will make a huge difference in your 1/35 scale PT Boat project. They simply look awesome.............

Ted,

No fabric was thin enough to to be used and any fabric weave would be too coarse. While thinking about this a trying various approaches I staring at my usual cup of tea and soggy tea bag and noticed how, unlike tissue paper, tea bag paper is resilient even after sitting in hot water for a long time. Also, after the tea bag sat on a saucer for a while it has a great slumpy look of well used ife jacket. That was the solution and became what you see,

A single tea bag yields 4 jackets per bag based on a pattern I created. Each jacket is a single cut of material that is folded, stuffed with cotton, and glued. The collars are made of styrene rod that is heated and curled, cut and sanded to the general shape you see. The collars ties and vest straps are also made of tea bag material glued on after the jacket body is complete.

As I mentioned there is more to explain of course and I will make the details of this process and the pattern available soon.

I am always amazed at the types of things modelers use to accomplish a build. Tea Bags? Who would have thought our Kapok's would be made from this material. This is what makes a good modeler so special............
