Guys
I am posting a link to an auction site that shows a very ornate US Navy 1942 Pelorus that has recently sold - not only is it very pretty but they give a write-up on it so it is also educational - I think Garth got it right.

It's a standard Navy pelorus.

It is a form of a compass, ... I was almost right ... a pelorus COULD be used as an alternative compass - could it not?
