Hi folks!
So Victor asked me if I knew what this thing was. I havent a clue. It sort of looks like a compass mounted in the exterior searchlight mount. Can you guys look at it and let me know what the item may be? Thanks Jerry

Guys,

The first item is probably an alternate searchlight (of a type I've never seen), as it is mounted on the searchlight pintle mount, but, it also looks like it could be some sort of giant compass (of a type I've never seen)..?

The round item on the dayroom cabin bulkhead is the "LUX pull," part of the fire supression/control system on the boat. I had asked about this device several years ago, and Dr. Al Ross replied with the answer as to what it was.

Thanks Drew! The LUX Pull is to operate the CO2 Flooding Fire Suppression bottles. LUX does not stand for Liquid Oxygen, it is merely the brand name of the company that makes the devices. That is a good catch though, I could not tell but now that you point it out it sure is a Lux Pull station.

Still the giant compass or searchlight has me mystified! Anybody else know what it is? Thanks Jerry

I am almost convenienced that what we are looking at is a Navy Pelorus, which was used to take relative bearings of terrestrial objects to determine the boats position. The top part had a compass rose showing N,S,E, and W, subdivided into diamond shaped markings which furthur divides the circle into NE,SE, SW, and NW.

Great image Jerry! My guess is an aldis signal light. I've been trying to find out more about them but not much luck so far. It looks like it would fit in the aldis locker, like this locker listed as installed on the 103-162 boats with armor:

every Aldis light I am finding has a pistol type hand grip, which probably houses a trigger for signaling, this handle must be on the side we can't see, or it is some other type of light with a filter lens on it. I don't think it is a pelorus, as the user would have to stand on the bench seat just to get an accurate reading.
Take care,
TED
p.s. does anyone have other angle photos of 344?

I just think it's a covered alternate compass.

T. Garth, that's what I thought it might be, if it wasn't an alternate searchlight, but I think Frank may be on to something with the pelorus --

I've seen smaller versions of peloruses (if that's what it is) on board ships, with the device in a cradle somewhat like this item is, to allow it to be able to swing freely, and with the rosette compass face suspended in liquid in the top...

Jeff, your CAD rendition of the rear of the 103-class cockpit area is whetting my appetite for more of your great stuff... I've had computer problems lately, and haven't checked your cool site in a while...this will be rectified post haste!
