Hi there.

On another thread it was mentioned that some people like 1/24 scale. For anyone interested here are my some of my thoughts on scales starting at 1/72.

For the modeller with a limited budget or the desire to collect a number of different variants or even comparison build (such as the German S-Boots) in a fairly small space 1/72 scale is ideal. It is large enough that a fair bit of detail can be added and for those who do not like to or are unable to scratch-build there are a number of after-market items that can be added. There are also a few other Coastal Forces caft from other countries such as Britain's Vospers and Germany's S-Boots available in this scale. As well as those there are the modern Vosper and Japanese fast patrpl boats. What is really great about the 80' Elco model by Revell is its low price which is low enough that you can build many variants without breaking the bank or upsetting SWMBO. VBG This scale can be RC if the model is run on a calm surface. There are also many other kits, such as aircraft and vehicles that can be added to a scene.

There aren't any PT boats available in 1/48 scale that I'm aware of other than the two old Monogram Vietnam boats.

When you get up to 1/35 scale there still isn't much available but what there is appears quite detailed right out of the box. This scale has the added advantage that there are so many other kits and accessories that can be combined to create a stunning diorama. Italeri *MIGHT* expand their PT boat line and we can only hope that they will release some of the kits on our wish list. This scale is also pretty good for RC as the models are large enough to operate in bigger bodies of water than a small pond or swimming/wading pool. It is too bad that aircraft models are 1/32 scale instead of 1/35 as they would fit a diorama much better. !/32 scale aircraft *CAN* be used with a 1/35 sale PT boat *IF* the aircraft is positioned in the foreground where it give's a sense of forced perspective. The cost to RC a 1/32 or 1/35 scale PT boat is still not too high and much of the required gear is readily available even in small town brick and mortar hobby shops. When we get into 1/24 and larger scales we are getting into the area of scratch-building on a large scale. These boats at around 40 inches length have the advantage of being able to operate in small lakes as they are a good size to handle rough water. Getting crew figures and accessories for them is not as easy as it is in the smaller scales and it does cost more.

Those are some of my thoughts on various scales of PT boat models.

Any one want to add comments or ideas?

Cheers from Peter

Peter

I think Blue Jacket Models makes a 1/48 PT 103 Class. I have never looked it up, so I might just do that tonight. As if I need another model right now...............

Yep they do make a kit in 1/48 scale. Goes about 20 inches long. You can look it upon their web site.
