...Al Ross' father was Quartermaster on the 34 boat in the Philippines, and was wounded in action. Having gone aground and damaged a prop, the 34 was limping back to base in daylight when attacked by 4 Japanese float planes:

"When their bombs were expended, the planes began diving low to strafe the boat. On their first run, Torpedoman's Mate Second Class David W. Harris, manning the starboard .50-caliber machine guns was killed, and his guns knocked out. Quartermaster First Class Albert P. Ross shot down one of the enemy planes, but on the next run he was hit in the leg and his guns were disabled."

John;
Thanks, but what most of the books don't tell you was that Al's Dad was also a POW for about 3 years. When repatriated, he remained in the Navy
and retired as a LCDR.
Take care,
TED

Hi Ted,

Yeah, I knew that too, from my conversations with Al. I just ran across the posted quote while re-reading the book for the umpteenth time and thought I'd share it. They were an amazing generation.

Cheers,

Who is Al Ross and how can I get in touch with him. My dad was Doyle Smart and he was the Quartermaster on the 31 boat. I would like to find decendents from the squadron and possibly exchange information. I have already met a few and have gained considerable knowledge from them.

In addition to Al, Mark Culp is also a memeber of this board, his Grandfather was also on the 31 boat. He had a website for PT 31 but i can't find it here at work, I have it saved on my home computer and will post later today.
Take care,

John & Tedd,
Thanks for sharing that story. I had no idea. Al's dad must have been a tough tough guy to get through all that.

For anyone interested, there is a short segment by Al's dad on PT SEA STORIES #2, a VHS tape that used to be available from PTBI...
