David;
You are correct. I have seen this photo of the damaged stern labeled as as another boat now as 311, but I believe it actually might be PT 308 (LA DEE DA) . Al is correct, PT 311 was destroyed by the mine.
Take care,
TED

My records also have it listed as the 308, but who knows?

I'm certainly no expert, but it doesn't really look like explosive damage.....

It seems like reports of all boats that were mined in the Med, had there entire sterns blown off. Not just a portion.

O.K. Lets think about this one, in Jerrys post under March the 8th. the PT 308 rammed the PT 304 and " MURPH" reported that he had lost his stern and was taking water, yet still managed to limp back to base 6 hours away.
Will is correct, damage from high explosive as we have seen from a number of photos on the board is quite messy. This however is almost like a knife cut and consistant with a ramming,no shrapnel damage to be seen.
HMMMM i bet the skipper of the PT308 was a bit red faced when he had to put that report in!!!
If i am right of course as this is just my reasoning from Jerrys report.

I just noticed the porthole on the photo of the boat with stern damage. How many Ron 22 boats put those in ?

I have an original photo that has the follwing written on the back from PT-307 Crewmember. "Patrolling between Leghorn and Spezia, we spotted enemy Destroyer and Corvette, gave chase, Received 20mm & 40MM hits across chart house. Three of our men killed and others wounded. Made it back to Bastia. The front of the photo shows the boat and damage back at base. E-Mail me if you want the photo sent to you........

That's what it was, I new I did not dream reading it, yes 304 did collide with 308 and this is the result.
As for portholes Steve, a number of RON 22 boats had them installed, as I told you when we met, I have no idea why, except to maybe conserve some battery power while pierside during daylight hours, maybe Arthur can shed some light here, pardon the pun! Most that did have them, had them in the vicinity of the .50 cal gun tubs on port and stbd side, and the engine room area. My info is from Walt Pirog via Bob Savage, the second crew installed the portholes on 308 as well as the 1/4" steel plating on exterior of the hull, in the vicinity of the fuel tanks, port and stbd. While Charles Murphy and Vern Peak remained as Skipper and Exec of 308, until the Squadron returned to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1945, I guess some of the crew rotated back to the states while the boat was still at Leghorn or Toulon, hence the statement of the second crew.
Take care,
TED

Hello all,
For the record I have no idea if that boat that I think may be the 311 really is that boat. I was just guessing. It may be a different boat indeed in RON22, Your guess is as good as any! Jerry
