My father was in RON 24 and served aboard a PT in New Guinea! He passed away in 1958 and I have been trying to find his boat number. He enlisted from Massachusetts and went to Melville RI for his PT training...Thanks

I have four crew photos with unidentified members from Ron 24 boats. I will e-mail them to you if you want.

My father was also with Ron 24 when stationed at Brunei Bay, Borneo. First assigned to 01/1945: Assigned PT Base 17, Bobon Point, Samar, PHILLIPINES. Then Assigned 02/25/45: Officer-in-Charge, C-3, Unit 45, Temporary duty PT Advance Base Five. San Pedro Bay, Leyte. PHILLIPINES . Then Assigned 4/45: MTB Rons, C-3 Unit #45. Officer in Charge of Communications, Advance Base, Brunei Bay, BORNEO. Rank: Lt. Jg. Shore: Base Communications. Afloat: Communications Watch Officer.
Would it be possible for me to also have copies of the photos you mentioned. His name was William (Bill) Shafer and he was Communications Officer at the Base and while on the PTs. I have ordered his military records but even these do not say which PT Boat he was on board. My email is beachedsiren2003@yahoo.com. My father passed in 2002 and since he did not like to discuss his time in the war he never told us to which PT boat he was assigned.
I have a photo of the PT boats at the dock at Brunei Bay with some men on board. I need to get a good scan and then will to share/post.

Sure, Judy. I'll dig up the photo(s) and see if I have any other info that might be of use. Good to have you aboard, and thanks for the very concise history on your dad.

Thank you so much for your answer. I do appreciate any information you might add to my research on my Father's time in Borneo. It has taken some time but I've been able to piece together a decent time line for his time in the South Pacific from his military records. He said he knew Kennedy but frankly didn't think too highly of anyone that got his boat run over, but of course that was just one man's opinion. He had a number of undeveloped rolls of film in his foot locker but my brother accidentally flooded our basement and ruined everything. I doubt the film could be restored enough to be developed. He also told me stories of the men trading cigarettes and chocolates (provided in the sea rations) for unhatched bird's eggs, shells necklaces, knives, etc with the tribal people and their practice of head taking of the Japanese soldiers. Has that ever been discussed here or it that an inappropriate topic for this forum?

Hi Judy.
If the rolls of film were in containers they may still be okay.
Cheers from Peter
