Okay, it's off to PT-105 which is based on Al's Bluejacket 1:48 PT-103 class model. I've posted pictures of where I am on the site so I'll not waste your time with that.

Now for my obscure question of the day. There is a flag box mounted to the day cabin right behind the cockpit. Does anyone have any detail on this? I have not come across anything so far and mostly I only see them in drawings because they're not in a great location for photos.

So I'm wondering if these things had lids or if there are slots for flags or what? I would love to have the veterans chime in on this one.

I can't be of much help on this since the 167 never had a day room (thanks to the japs). I remember those boxes on other ron 10 boats but never saw flags in any since we didn't use navy flags for signals. The boxes had hinged lids to protect from water, but they were used for storing water bottles, sandwiches etc used on patrols. I never saw any with flag slots and I think in many cases the personnel didn't recognize the purpose of the box.

Bob;
I for one am sure glad you are on this board, I wish I knew of you when I was building my 1/32nd scale PT 167(summer 1944) and my 1/72 scale PT 167 (late Spring 1945), I have alot of re-work to do to make them historically correct. I always thought this was fully repaired(back to factory specs), Bowman, when I talked to him over the phone years ago, never mentioned anything about this. However, if you want to drop me an e-mail, I can tell you a really interesting story of how the 167 ended the war without an Exec. Your e-mails and posts have cleared this up. You can see photos of my 167's if you would like on the photobucket account. I even have the flag box on my larger model!
thanks again!
Take care,
TED

Bob,
That is great information and will help me with my project. I'm going to have to think about that for a while.

I've seen flag boxes on the forward face of the dayroom on 80' Elcos, and on the aft side of the rear cockpit armor, also...

A drawing on Dick's DVD shows a day room mounted box about 21" wide, 15" high, and 5" deep. A top view shows the box partitioned into 20 squarish spaces, 2 rows of 10 partitions. The location of the center of the box is about 25" to the port of the boat's center line and the top of the box about 7" below the day room roof at the center line. Sorry but I couldn't find a drawing showing construction and exact measurements, the above dimensions are an estimate after scaling the drawing.

Geez Ted, you're going to remove the day room from your finished model? That's some serious dedication to accuracy, hat's off to you!

Jeff;
Not exactly remove it, modify it. according to a previous message from Bob, the Seabees/base force made a dayroom type structure but it was only 3-3 1/2 feet above the deck. This was later, maybe late fall of 1943 or early spring 1944 and that is how the boat finished the war. My xerox/photo of the 167 coming into port after the torpedo hit, Nov 5, 1943 just shows the SO-A radar mast mounted on boards or plywood, "The repair" at this time is about 12" above the deck.
Take care,
TED

I remember Bob saying recently that the day room was too difficult to replace in the field. After seeing the drawings I can see why. And apparently it wasn't the most popular place for the crew to hang out in anyway. If you have any images of the 167 I'd love to see them Ted.
