Greetings,
I'm wondering if somebody can tell me more about the cable that ran from the torpedo tube ignitor into the deck. I see this on some boats but not on others. It appears on the 109 as it was loaded for Panama and I'm wondering if these cables were removed in the field or if they were only on a limited number of boats. I'm trying to decide if I want to add this to my model. Also does anyone have any idea how they connected to the ignitor? This picture makes it look like it comes out of the side.
Thanks all
Dave

I have the drawings for the MK18. I think there are drawings for the impulse chamber, so I'll look when I get home tonight and scan them.

Cable exits the impulse chamber in the lower inboard quarter.

Excellent Al. Thanks so much. I had not seen this drawing before.

Any thoughts on why this exists on some boats and not others?

I think I will install them on my boat unless somebody can convince me otherwise... real fast. :-)

Very nice Al, do you have drawings for the entire tube?

It would be a nice detail Dave and reasonably easy.

I think the tubes may be trained out in the top photo but I'm not sure, the bottom photo is a closeup of the 109 you posted:

Jeff,

I do have the rest of the tube drawings. They are for a MK18 Mod5 tube and are in a series of 8.5 x 11 sections. I'll see if I can stitch them and post.

From a modeling perspective I cast new Impulse chambers as part of my casting learning experience. They came out pretty good. I also added what look to be handles that are 180 degrees apart in what I'll call the throat of the chamber but about 25 degrees above and below horizontal. They always seem to be in the same position. Are these in fact just handles for removing the forward end of the chamber? It's not important to what I'm doing but I am curious. Also, looking at the drawings, is there a left side chamber and a right side chamber? It looks like there's only a connecting point on one side.

Clearly this feature was on the 109 boat so staying true to my "photographic evidence rule" I will add the wiring from the impulse chamber to the deck. It has to come down from the chamber, travel along the side of the tube for a while, loop around, and secure to the deck. At this point in the build I'm not sure how easy it will be. :-) But I have some very thin wire that I will spray black and add. I'll do it on the 1/48 105 model as well.

I'll have some photos posted soon. I need to get this build completed in time for our next ship club meeting.

Cool David, I look forward to seeing the boat. The cable looks longer in the top photo, no clue why the extra length.

That would be great Al, thank you very much! I've not seen detail drawings like yours for the tube either. If you don't have the time and need a Stitch Boy let me know, I'd be happy to do it.

I've seen some b&w wartime film footage of PT 149 preparing for a patrol, in which the torpedoman is shown removing the forward end of a tube impulse chamber by the handles and inserting a black powder charge in it.

As I remember it, that shot is either a medium or a close-up, so it should show some decent detail.
