My mistake. In my haste to write this down, Zinser said 150 Feet, not 150 yards. Sorry about the mix up................

Frank - thanks!
That's a correction wields the door shut on any future, future (or past) author's accounts that don't incorporate these facts confirmed by three that were there.

Nat - thanks for the log pages...If I can impose one last time (I may be lying here) on this subject...
Liebenow and I are trying to figure out a sequence of events and I think the log pages are they only way to unscramble it. If possible could you send me (or tell me where to get) the last 6 days of June and first 2 day of July (1943).

An issure with the assumption that the PT Base at Rendova was not aware of LT. Evans contact with the Captain and crew of the PT 109 and his arrangements for their rescue.
Quote re Lumberi reaction to meassage following,
Lumberi was already in a state of excitement over a message that had just been relayed from Evans.
Preceding quote from PT109 John f. Kennedy in WW11 by R.J.Donovan.
Quote Oficial message to LT. Evans 11.30 am August 7th 1943, from callsign PWD (Munda Coastwatcher)
GREAT NEWS X COMMANDER PT BASE RECEIVED A MESSAGE JUST AFTER YOURS FROM SURVIVORS BY NATIVE X THEY GAVE THEIR POSITION AND NEWS THAT SOME ARE BADLY WOUNDED AND REQUEST RESCUE X WE PASSED THE NEWS THAT YOU HAD SENT CANOES AND WITHOUT WISHING TO INTERFERE WITH YOUR ARRANGEMENTS WANT TO KNOW CAN THEY ASSIST X THEY WOULD SEND SURFACE CRAFT TO MEET YOUR RETURNING CANOES OR ANYTHING YOU ADVISE X THEY WISH TO EXPRESS GREAT APPRECIATION X WE WILL AWAIT YOUR ADVICE AND PASS ON X
This message was only one of a number sent by LT. Evans to either PWD (Munda) or KEN (Guadalcanal ) Re the PT 109.
But this is the one that puts it in no doubt that the PT Boat Base was aware of LT. Evans contact with the survivors prior to their rescue.

Dave - I'll ask Liebenow for comment as I'd like to reconcile this however time maybe catching up with the 90-year old skipper. He said his comment without me asking about the 109 (which I have avoided as it is not of much interest to me other then it was a rather unusual type mission to undertake). He seemed to say it with much clarity but it may be my mistake to post such comments at this point. The 157's log pages (provide by Nathaniel Smith) give little to no details on a number of events.
Fortunately the point about how far off-shore he was when they picked up the 109 crew is corroborated so that is correct (no more then a 100 to 150 feet).

It might help to ask your friend Bud who arranged the meet between PT 157 and JFK and were it was to be as JFK was with LT. Evans untill he was taken out into Ferguson Passage to be picked up.
Both R.J.Donovans book and At Close Quarters by Capt. R.J.Bulkley, Jr. concer on this point.
On a lighter note please tell Lt. Liebenow how wonderfull this Aussie feels to be able to corespond through you with a Gent who was there and will put up with our constant questions.
Looking at the Google Sat. image of Olasana Is. it would appear that you could get a Boat quite close to shore. So we concer on that point.
So with a little research i have found that it is not all that hard to reach or stay in this area of the Solomons and the wife likes the idea (the inportant part of travel O/S) so given a little time to arrange a trip there may be on the cards. There is a resort about two miles away from Gross Isl. and we are both Divers, with a boat at hand from the resort we can enjoy a week away and i can look over the area at lesiure. Interested?

Hi Nat - thanks for the links. The first one, however, didn't seem to work.
