Hi there Jeff.

My understanding is that many crews removed that bridge armour to increase the maneuverability of the crew in that area. Therefore it is quite possible that boats left for the theater of operations with the armour and bench seats in situ but the crews removed them either before combat on the advice of other crews or after action when it was discovered that those items hindered quick movement especially at night in the near total darkness

Cheers from Peter.

Hi PeterTareBuilder,

What you say may be correct with some PTs. I have no info on that.

Zooming in on a high resolution copy of the photo of the PTs on the White Plains show that PT-153, 154 and 155 (in NY), in which you can see into the cockpit, there is no such wall.

I'm not sure what the box is holding...

Hey Pat, you're right the mountains on Bora Bora sure have an interesting outline. From this angle, I see what looks like a head, maybe Abe Lincoln?:

Thanks, Jeff...

Man, they're definintely standing on something elevated in those photos, as the usual height of an 80' Elco's port cockpit bulkhead seemed to have been about shoulder-level (or slightly higher for a shorter guy) on most guys, judging from lots of other photos of 80' Elcos...

Obviously, it's always an advantage to have a little elevation at the wheel when piloting a boat, so you can see over the foredeck when you need to...guess that's what the "benches" or steps in and behind the cockpit were for originally...

Chart house drawings show 51.875" from the deck center line at bulkhead 33 (at the forward bridge door) to the top of bridge and railing where the man is resting his elbow in the one photo. Another drawing for PT 123 and on boats shows about 1" of rubber mat framed with 1" x 0.5" mahogany cleats mounted to the deck so that would lift him a bit. The top of the windshield and armor would be another 9" or so. Maybe the lack of armor on an early boat makes it appear short? Or maybe there's a higher platform they are standing on than what the drawing indicates, it's hard to tell how high up on the coaming it comes but the inside edge looks higher than 1"...
