Can the Navy provide logs books for RON 16's trip from Seattle to Attu?
Is there a log for each boat? Is there a log for the squadron?
Thanks, Russ Whipple

Each boat and Squadron kept a log. Whether the National Archives has them would require a trip to check their list (or maybe a phone call, don't know). (The Navy sent all of their WWII stuff to the National Archives). They have some logs, but not all. Unless someone on the forum has a list of which boats and squadrons logs the Archives has.

Hi Russell, I have access to the RON16 diary written by Chief Alvin Piotter. It was donated to us by his widow Celia Piotter It covers the trip to Alaska and beyond. What specifically do you want to know? I could transcribe portions or maybe make copies and mail it to you? It is a 400 page ring bound book. Jerry PT658 Portland, Or

Hi Jerry,
If there is any way to get the entire diary copied, I would really like to read all of it.
My dad told so many stories when I was a kid, about the PT's. He had stories from March 1941 when he enlisted, and went from Caldwell, Id
to Salt Lake City, to San Diego for basic training, to Madison Wisconsin
for radioman's school, to New Orleans where he was a driver for a Lieutenant who was designing a new detonator for PT torpedoes, while waiting for RON16 Pt's to be built by Higgins. The list of stories seems endless. This is part of what happened to him before he even stepped foot on a PT boat. His WWII years lasted until he was discharged in October 1945 at Melville RI.
Any way, I know it would be a big job to copy the whole diary, I don't know if Kinkos does jobs like this, but I would be more than happy to cover any costs. I'll come to Portland and get it copied.
I got to ride on PT658 in Portland OR in Sept or Oct 2004. What a thrill and emotional experience that was. My dad passed away in 2002, He would have loved to see PT658.

Russ,

For your information there is a narrative available entitled

PT SQUADRON #16 World War II Memories by Tom Hart. I think the cost is less than $20.

It can be obtained from:

Meigs County Historical Society
P.O. Box 145
Pomerroy, OH 45769

Phone: (740) 992-3810
email - meigscohistorical@verizon.net

Thanks Don,
I sent for a copy last fall, very good book. I am always looking for any new info I can find on RON 16. It amazes me what the men of the PT Squadrons went through.

Hi Russ - If you read this board often you might remember that I am always looking for info on Ron 16 as my uncle died on PT 300. He was in Alaska also. I have been to the Archives many times and plan to go again soon. email me at mcpinerise@aol.com. not all log books are available - for instance - the log book for PT 300 went down with the boat. Someone on this board indicated that they found the wreckage and will soon (hopefully) be posting more info. Cant wait!
Jerry's info was great! I have found a few pics also. My good friends here on this board have helped a lot!
