Have any of you guys purchased the 1/350 scale HIGGINS or ELCO PT BOATS now for sale. I understand they are resin kits, and was wondering if anyone had put one together. As my new idea is to have a couple of PT BOATS along side a DESTROYER, Garth gave me the idea to use these kits and purchase a 1/350 scale DESTROYER. How long would the boats and the Destroyer be? I am looking at a space issue here, as the PT-374 project is pretty large, and I do nt want to make space an issue in my PT BOAT DEN. This scale would certainly make things easier, but the Testors boats would take up much less space, although trying to find a Destroyer in tha samll scale would be tough............

Tamiya makes a 1/350 Fletcher destroyer, it's 13" long. A similar scale PT would be about 2.76" long.

Frank: I have done the 1/350th Elcos from WEM. You need a steady hand and a good magnifier for the detail work.

Ahoy there mates!

I don't know anything about the 1/350 PT boats but there are a few 1/350 scale Destroyers on the market now. Dragon makes the USS GEARING DD-170, the USS BUCHANAN DD-484 192, the USS BUCHANAN DD-484 TOKYO BAY and the USS LIVERMORE DD-429 1942.

Revell makes the C-3 FREIGHTER "HAWAIIAN PILOT" in 1/380 scale.

Tamiya makes a USS Missouri and a USS New Jersey as well as a Japanese destroyer and Japanese Cruisers in 1/350 scale.

Fujimi makes IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY SEA CREWMAN and there may be US sailors out there too.

Cheers from Peter

Thanks guys, but after a one hour conversation with Stan Pienkowski, it was decided that the 1/350 scale project would be too small, the 1/200 scale would need to have a destroyer scratch built, and the 1/72 scale would be too big, soooo what to do.

We decided to purchase a 1/72 scale PBY-5 BLACK CAT Plane kit from Academy, and using two 1/72 scale PT BOATS I already have, willl make a diorama showing the 2 boats on a rescue mission, dropping off 2 downed Pilots, using a raft, paddling over to the BLACK CAT. Ok, so here is where you, my fiends come into play. What Squuadron boats do we depict, and what Squadron Black Cats to represent. Any rescue during WWII that involved the boats and the planes that mght have been covered by the press, or any of you guys have family that rode the planes, or may have been involved with this type rescue. I will be happy to honor anyone for this Diorama.

I will purchase what I need (the plane) as I have mentioned PT-374 project is first and foremost on my mind............

Frank;
How about this one: VP 54 arrived at Henderson Field in March 1943 with their PBY-5A's already painted black. The PT squadron that first really started coordinated Black Cat/PT Boat attack operations with them was LCDR Bob Kelley's RON 9. This is documented in At Close Quarters. (pg 133, 145-146),
however, at this time VP 54 was performing a dual role, Dumbo by day and Tarbaby by night, so it would not be unusual to see some fliers getting picked up by a Black Cat from two PT's from RON 9, maybe PT 154 for Ham Smith and another RON 9 boat.
take care,
TED

Love the idea Ted. I would need to know what the color scheme was for those RON 9 boats during that time. We will of course make any changes to the 1/72 scale PT-109 Kits to represent what the RON 9 boats had for armament as that time. Of course it depends on which two boats will be represented..............
