Hi all,
Can anyone identify what this is? I've never seen it on a PT Boat or anything else for that matter. It doesn't seem to be a jackstaf? Any ideas?
Thanks/Dave

David,
If you look on the port side there appears to be a life line stanchion symetrical to your mystery object. I would assume the post is the starboard life line stanchion. A crew member could have hung a wet sea bag, small drag anchor or whatever on the lifeline. It is really hard to tell but I do not think it is any type of fixture of consequence.
But it is a great photograph that I have not seen before. Can you post it again without the anotations?

Greetings,
I thought that at first too. But if you look between it and the seated sailor you'll see the stanchion on the other side. This one seems to be just to the right of the smoke generator. I've seen photos of boats with a second jack staff but this one seems more vertical and it's got that whatever it is on top of it. You may be right, it may just be a sea bag.
The photo came from a web site called toonsatwar at the following link. I found the 524 post under older posts. The person posting this item, Disney Dave (a.k.a. DD) said they had over 150 photos that they got from a crew member. I would love to see these photos. I'm going to try and reach out to him and see if he can share some of these photos with us.
But please check out his site and there's some history about the boat there. It's my leading candidate for my 1/35 Italeri build.

David,
My read on the other post is the staff for the ensign. It appear at an angle and a half post, which the ensign staff was. The other half slipped in with the flag while the boat was moored. I still think the post with the object is the second stanchion. It is a tough read as the 2D photo provides some optical illusions. Maybe with a better resolution scan of the original you could zoom in on the object, who knows.
Regardless a great photograph. It is always nice to see fresh material rather than the usual fare we have seen for 50 years.

I dunno, guys. whatever the object is, it looks too symetrical to be just draped there.

I believe the 524 was Walt Kundis's boat, and if I'm not mistaken, he is still with us.
Maybe Walt can shed some light on what the object might have been...

I tried to clean the photo up with NikonWorks. At super magnification, it looks like the position of the mystery object is indeed where the starboard stanchion would be and the base looks right, but the vertical shaft itself looks thicker than the portside stanchion.
Go figure.

Greetings,
Thanks for looking at it guys. It looks like it's going through the deck right next to the smoke generator which makes me think that it's not the stanchion. I've been wrong before though. It would be great if we could find DD (a.k.a. Disney Dave) who has a boat load of photos of this boat. Sorry about that very weak pun.
This is indeed Walt Kundis' boat. I don't recall seeing him posting here. Does anyone know how to reach him?
Thanks everyone!
Dave

I tried to blow the object up, but little can be gained from this. It does appear to be something drapped over that Stantion post, simular to a cover of sorts for one of the guns, but this is streching it a bit..........

David,
Another fellow named David did an interview with Walt Kundis and put up a blog about it. Check out http://ptboats.blogspot.com/ for his contact info.
