PRJM3,

Thanks for these photos and the story. As a Bubblehead, myself, I appreciate it even more.

I plan all kinds of little misc. details for each boat in the nest and the laundry is one of them.

I see in some photos of the Oyster Bay and the boats, that some boats had "tents" rigged up over the midship areas.

I'd love to see a close up shot of these to see how they were rigged and I've wondered what purpose (besides shade) they served. Also, what color they might have been.

Another dilemma will be "Which boats had the tents rigged on them?" I may have to invoke some creative license when finishing off my diorama.

Hi Carl,
I've seen your work on Modelwarships.com and I'm very impressed.
Reading about where you sourced all your parts causes me to respect the level of dedication to accuracy you have. I really like your project with the PT's. It's going to be terrific. I can't wait to see more!

Thank, David! I'm flattered!

You seem to have a special interest, too. Your USS Geneva, in particular. I love the base that you have for the 1/35 LCVP.

Yep. Back to the PT Boats now. I have two to complete that are in progress. One of wood in 1/48 and the other the Revell PT-109 boat. If you liked the LCVP base wait till you see what I did for the 109 boat! :-)

Take care and I look forward to seeing more of your progress on this one.

Come on Dave. How about a peak at the 109?

Carl,

If you want to contact me directly at prjm3@msn.com I can provide some higher resolution deck-level pictures of the tarps and their rigging. I think they were strictly for shade. They are in various colors but mostly dark, probably OD. You can see the grommets along the edges of the tarps. (Now that I think of it, this may explain my dad's penchant for covering things up with a "tarp". I later figured out that it was short for tarpaulin.) A small tarp over the bridge area seemed to be common, at least on the 361 and other RON 27 boats, plus larger canopies over the forward deck area.

How on earth would you do the rigging in that small of a scale?

Thanks for this insight, Randy! With what Ed, Frank, and Blake have emailed to me, I now see that the tarps were rigged forward of the bridge/cockpit and the laundry strung from the mast to the barrel of the 40mm.

My plan for a 1/350 scale tarp would be by using thin brass rod/wire and form a support structure and then try to attach a black rectangular piece of decal film over the frame using glue. I'd then soften the decal, a little, with a solvent and then paint the tarp with right color.

I will email you, soon. If you can't wait, my email is kapnkarl1 at aol.com.

I've been working on the base for my diorama using birch cabinet-grade plywood with a groover routered around the perimeter for the plexiglass case to fit into. I will use birch strip veneer around the edge of the base and stain it after I get it back from the trophy shop that will make the plexiglass case for it. This base is smaller than the one that had initially intended to use. I thought that there was too, much blank water in the larger base.

I have painted and cut a piece of Plastruct "choppy water" clear plastic sheet. It is calm enough to replicate the harbor / gulf at San Pedro, Leyte, Philippines.

I will attach it to the wood with contact cement and then spread Liquitex acrylic "varnish" over the water and attach the tender at that moment, too. The varnish will act like a glue and hold the ship and boats to the base. I may drill for some screws to pull the ship tight to the base, as well.

The boats will be attached one at a time, later, with a little Liquitex buttered on the bottom of them.

I am so blown away by this Diorama, mainly because of it's small size. It is very unique and would look very nice in my Exhibit. All kidding aside Carl, this is just awesome. I only wish the other guys that have projects going on would start publishing photos of their work. As soon as my guys start taking more pictures of our PT-374 project, and we get a bt more items completed, they will be here for all to enjoy............

Carl,

Your diorama looks like it's shaping up very, very nicely. Can't wait to see the finished product!
