Simply amazing how you are able to work with something so small, and get the detail you have put on the boats. Wish that 40mm could be trained to a lower lever though, as it is too high. Beautiful job Carl, I am not sure how you get your photos to come out so well, but they look awesome...........

the radar mast needs to be thicker and the radar dome needs to be also.

Ted,

Thank you, very much, for your observations and for studying my model so closely.

I think that I can fix the size of the radar dome, but the mast came with the model kit as photo-etched brass. Because I intend to build 8 of these boats, I'm going to refrain from scratch building thicker masts and use the ones that come with each of the kits.

I look forward to more constructive suggestions from you as this proceeds.

Thanks, Frank!

Was the 40mm actually capable of elevating that high? Or is it that it shouldn't be elevated so high while not in use.

I have 7 more of these 40mm to build and will pay more attention to it. This one was elevated this high because at first the gun mount on the model had a railing on the back. I had to elevate it this high so that the back of the gun would fit within the back rail. I have sinde removed that back rail. Ed said that they didn't have these on most of the boats in Ron 33.

I'm using a magnifying lamp and tweezers on these. I couldn't do it without the magnifier.

My digital camera has a Macro feature which allows be to get really close, like this.

Hey Carl,
Nice Models! I love the details also for such a small scale. I agree with Ted though, the photo etched radar mast looks really out of proportion smaller than that of the rest of the boat. Plus it seems like it is a simple mast of the early PT103 design, The SOA Radar Dome would have been mounted on a much more substantial mast. Just my personal opinion, no big deal.
Also, I found a photo about PT Boats getting food from tenders. It is in the book "At Close Quarters" I also found a picture taken from a tender of PT131 in a nest. Here they are in case this helps answer some questions. Also just by coincidence, we on board PT658 hosted a reunion group from the USS Oyster Bay. I included a couple of photos of their visit here. Carl:

In answer to your question: Yes the 40mm mount could be elevated that high, although usually when stowed they were not left in that position, so I would make the remaining 7 with their Bofors much lower............even or straight across would be good.

Jerry,

Those are great pics! Thanks! Every little aspect of the PT Boat and Tender relationships helps me out, a lot.

I came across those USS Oyster Bay reunion pics. I spoke with one of the organizers, Bill Robertson, a few months before the reunion. Bill sent me some really nice pics of the Oyster Bay and I am keeping him updated on my model.

Frank,

Thanks for answering that question. Maybe I'll put a few sailors around the 40mm on this one like their working on it and have it elevated for a reason; whatever that might be.

I have fixed the size of the dome, here. I'll be keeping the mast(s) the way that it is. I've attached the star decals and put canvas around the aft .50 cal. (This is done with inserting white glue in between the rails and letting it dry clear. Then its paint on the outside.)

I applied the camo scheme. I'm pretty sure this is the scheme that the boats had at Leyte, although I won't be trying to match each boat's camo pattern, exactly. There just isn't enough good photos of each boat to even try.

How's the color on the torpedoes? I've seen various colors of torpedoes from various references, especially the warhead assemblies.

Carl,

I have a quarter on the desk in front of me as a reminder of how small these boats are - amazing!

The attached picture of nested RON 27 boats show the two nearest 40 mm's elevated, possibly for maintenance. So having one that way alongside the Oyster Bay may not be out of place, particularly with some crew working on it as you have mentioned..

Other pictures of nested boats show "laundry" draped over the cannons on the bow, that may be a way to disguise the 37 mm if you still need to go that route.

I've also attached a picture of nested subs at Subic bay from the same time period. My father said they would argue with the crews of the Auastralian Corvettes (is it with a 'C' or a 'K'?) over who was the bravest, craziest, etc., but both would give up the honors when the submariners showed up.

Both pictures from the collection of R.J. McConnell Jr., CO, PT361. I'll be visiting Dad in two weeks, will show him this thread on your project.

I am a bit off the subject of models, but regarding the history of the ship, is my memory correct that the Oyster Bay suffered a casualty from a night time air raid while anchored at Wakde? She had stayed there because it was considered safer than Mios Woendi.
