Greetings, All!
Being new to this forum, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Carl Musselman and I'm a ship model builder and a USS Barnegat Class Seaplane Tender enthusiast. My father served on USS Duxbury Bay AVP-38 in '52-'53 and I made a model of his ship, for him, about two years ago. Since then, I have grown very, fond of this class of little ships.
Besides the USS Duxbury Bay, I have made another version of the Barnegat class into a U.S. Coast Guard variant, the USCGC Bering Strait (former USS Bering Strait AVP-34).
I am now working on a model, using the same basic model kit as the before mentioned models, of the USS Oyster Bay AGP-6 a PT Boat Tender variant of the Barnegat class.
I am about 95% done with the ship, but only about 25% done with the diorama that I have planned for it. I am working on portraying the USS Oyster Bay tending to Ron 33 at Leyte in Oct/Nov/Dec 1944.
I am about to start in on building the PT Boats for my diorama and I have many questions about the particulars of each boat in the squadron (weapon types and locations, for example) and questions about the relationship between the tender and the boats for example:
Did the tender provide electrical power to the boats?
Did the boats crews spend much time on the tender; i.e. sleeping eating, etc.? How did the boat crews get aboard the tender?
These are just a few of the questions that I have, or that I will have, and its probably plenty to include in this introduction.
Most gratefully yours,
Carl Musselman

Hello, Ted! Thank you for the "Welcome Aboard."
The model is 1/350 scale or 10.5" long.

Carl;
Then you probably know Iron Shipwright sells a nice 1/350th scale resin kit of the PT 565 RON 38 for $17 each. How many are you going to make?

Ted,
Yes, I'm aware of the ISW PT Boat, but it doesn't come with any of the photo-etched parts. It has the right torpedoes and the right engine room vent stack, but no PE.
I am modifying the WEM PT-109 kit and using torpedoes from JAG PT-200 kit.
From what I can tell, there were 9 boats in Ron 33 before 10/25/44 when the 493 boat was lost just after they arrived at Leyte. I have seen a list of Ron 33 boats that didn't inclued the 496 boat, and that has confused me.
So, to answer your question, I'll be making 8 boats in my diorama with PT Boats 489 - 497 less PT 493.
This is a rough layout that I had planned, but I've decided on a smaller water base.

This is my first experiment with a JAG PT-200. I was experimenting with the paint job. I don't intend to use this one. Wrong class of boat.
This is my first boat that I'll use for my diorama. I've made a scratch built engine room vent and 40mm ammo locker along with gun mount plates on the bow. I've cut out some bulkheads, topside, to make it more correct, as well.
Right now I have 4 WEM kits and will need 4 more.

Very nice work thus far. I am impressed when you consider how small the scale is. Can you imagine doing the same project using the 1/35 Italeri PT Boat. You would need two pool tables to put it on. Keep the photos coming, we love to see other's work on this site. Come on guys, I know many of you are working on projects, how about some photos.....

Hi Carl. Glad to see you found us here. I've been following your threads over on modelwarships.com and the work is amazing. Keep posting. Your 495 looks great. I can't imagine working on a boat that small.
Your should post links to your threads. The guys here would really enjoy seeing your progress.
Thanks,
Ed

Carl,
In answer to your questions let me run down a few answers for you using the 495 boat as a guide. You can refer to my Ron 33 and 495 build-up album pages.
As you show, at the bow is a 37 mm cannon. They typically have a distinctive loop-style magizine to hold the rounds.
Behind the 37, as you show, are 3 20mm guns with drum mags. The 495, 489 and 493 and probably others had one configured as an Acey-ducey. These had a 50 cal MG on each side of the 20mm and acted as a single mount. 489 and 493 had it as the forward mount of the 3. 495 had it on the starboard mount. Some used curved ammo boxes from the twin 50 cal turrets and and some used rectangular boxes.
A number of boats has an additional twin 50 cal can on a pole or tripod mount located between the port forwad torpedo and the bridge. Most of the boats had single 30 cal MGs on pole mounts attached to spray shields beside the cockpit.
At the stern the 40mm were the Army style and had no platform rails or depression rails. The 40mm ammo locker was field built and usually had a tarp cover on the aft side. 495 had 2 smoke canisters and no depth charges but the other boats usually had one canister and 2 DC. Some, like 490 had the DC across the stern with the smoke canister directly in front of them, aslo mounted across the stern. 493 had one DC located between the fore and aft torpedoes on each side.
All the boats had the SO style radar and masts.
This link will take you to the Ron 33 photo page:

I hope this helps.
