Guys'
I have a nice photo of PT 461(Aaron White's boat I believe)cockpit, and have a few questions that doesn't seem to show up in blueprints, was there some sort of fold down bench seat or small platform on the starboad side of the cockpit behind search light on this class boat? Was there one in the earlier class? PT 308 is my subject.
Also with all this talk about open ammo boxes on models , what does the inside of the larger 20mm ammo box look like? It was considerably larger than most 20mm ready storage boxes/lockers. I have viewed what is on 658 and this is not the box RON 22 had, There box usually sat on the port side forecastle behind the 20mm. Also Did RON 22/308 retain their armor plate behind the wheel or did they remove it as I think?
Another question:Portholes, when did this happen and how, and why? I know 305 had some, some photos I have seen suggest 308 had one on each side just below the turrets and slightly aft.
Well that's about it for now.....
Take care,
TED

Ted,

Some months ago, Russ Pullano posted a couple of photos on the Message Board of himself in PT 195's cockpit, and what looked like a little fold-down seat with a brace -- which reminded me of an old-fashioned ironing board -- was quite visible (in the folded-up position) on the port inside of the 195's cockpit.

The rear cockpit armor bulkhead had been removed in Russ's 195 photos, but if it had been in place, it looked like this "seat," if that's what it was, would have fit snugly along the bulkhead when folded down, and would have afforded someone an elevated perch just behind whomever was at the wheel, in order to see over the charthouse and foredeck.

I speculated at the time that this was an example of the "little underway seat" I'd read about in several written accounts of PTs. I believe Russ posted back that he didn't remember the seat, but -- there it is in the photos. Although I had read about a "little underway seat," before, I had never seen one, until Russ's photos.

I think this may be what you're referring to, although it -- and the searchlight -- would have been on the port side of the cockpit, not the starboard.

Drew;
Thank you for your response. I am with you, I still think of the 78" Higgins as the box the 77' and 80' ELCO was delivered in, but seriously I need a response to the 78' questions before I proceed with the build I am doing. PT 308 RON 22 was a Higgins.
Oh as a side note.....NAVY WON 17-3 OVER ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the 8th straight year!
Army won't be going to a bowl game but NAVY will go to the TEXAS BOWL against Missouri on DEC 31
TAKE CARE,
TED

Whoops! Sorry, Ted -- I completely overlooked the fact you were talking about 78' Higgins boats -- my mistake!

Is this the box Ted? It's from the UNO site:

http://www.pt103.com/images/ptpics/higgins/PT_302_to_313_450_to_473_Forward_20mm_Ammunition_Box_January_1944.jpg

They have another forward 20mm box but it's from a later series.

Cool Ted, glad it was the right one. Got to love having original drawings that show dimensions eh? I'm currently having a blast with Dick's ELCO DVD, what a treasure trove!
