I saw this obituary in my local Long Island Newspaper today. 11/28/09

WALTER - GEORGE E., LIFELONG RESIDENT OF ST. JAMES ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009. JOINED THE ST JAMES FIRE DEPARTMENT ON DECEMBER 1, 1941. FIREMAN FOR 68 YEARS. ST JAMES FIRE DEPARTMENT CHIEF DURING 1955-1958. ST JAMES FIRE DEPARTMENT COMMISSIONER 1964-1988. CAPTAIN OF ENGINE 2 AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS. JOINED U.S. NAVY DURING WW2, OBTAINING RANK OF 1ST CLASS PETTY OFFICER, SERVING ON PT BOATS IN SOUTH PACIFIC IN SAME UNIT AS PRESIDENT JFK, ACTIVE DUTY IN COMBAT. DURING THE WAR, WALTER SAW KENNEDY ON A DAILY BASIS AS THEY WERE IN THE SAME PT SQUADRON AND THEIR BOATS USE TO TIE UP NEXT TO EACH OTHER, HIS SON SAID. IN 1943, THEN LT. KENNEDY COMMANDED PT-109, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS, KENNEDY HELPED THE SURVIVING MEMBERS OF HIS CREW SWIM TO A NEARBY ISLAND WHERE THEY HELD OUT UNTIL THEY WERE RESCUED. GEORGE WALTER WAS PART OF THE SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM. AFTER THE WAR HE BECAME A UNION CARPENTER IN 1950'S UNTIL RETIREMENT.
