Greetings all,
I haven't seen this posted but my friend, Hugh Letterly of Loose Cannon Productions released his new PT Boat diorama at the IPMS Nationals. Here's a link to his kit. It's 1/700 scale so it's quite small. Some of the things in the pictures are not in the kit itself such as the tower and the PBY. I saw this at our local hobby shop completed and it's pretty cool.

It may be advertised as a "McHale's Navy Base," but the tiny PTs are 77' Elcos...
Interesting.

Yes, the kit comes with 77' Elcos and I'm sure Hugh would be happy to sell you some of his 80' Elco models too. :-)
The scene was done by a friend of Hugh's. I would probably do a few things differently. For example the boats should not be parked stern into the beach. I wouldn't do the tower either although it does add a nice focal point to the scene. I think I would also consider adding a dry dock. That wouldn't be too tough to scratch build.
Anyway, I thought it was kind of fun and I may have to do one myself.

Thanks for sharing this. I had stumbled across this Diorama the other day. I think its pretty neat, but for me much too small. I need something that visitors to my Exhibit can really sink their teeth into and get a good visual. Too bad this was not in 1/72 scale, although even at that scale you would need a ping pong table to put it all onto. Right now, we are working on a 1/35 scale diorama, using the Italeri Boat. It is a combined effort, with Alex Johnson as the main builder, Stan Pienkowski making the Quonset Hut, Al Lefleche doing the figure painting, and other diorama painting, and Frank Rycheck building figures, and doing the Palm Trees. Diorama will be in honor of my good friend that died a few months ago, Wallace McNeish. He served on PT-374 as Gunners Mate/1. Alex will be building the kit to represent her. Should be a fun build...........

Frank,
Hi. I thought you were doing it as one of the Ron 29 boats?

1/700 is perfect for home use.
The 1/35 project sounds like it will be fun. I'm looking forward to seeing that one.

1:72 is the best size for PTs. Small enough for room considerations but big enough so that you don't need a sub-atomic particle microscope to see details.

I think 1/35 is the best mostly now because of the major advances in figures, parts, trees, bushes, and of course the Italeri PT Boat. You are correct in needing space, but there is nothing like doing a 1/35 PT BOAT SCENE. You can add and do so much more, especially with figures and all the items on the market, not available in 1/72 scale........
