Thanks for the correction. My Mother had this photo in her possession after my Dad pased away. My Father had handwritten on the back of the photo "Crew of PT224".
My reference to Melville was an assumption since I am not well educated on this subject.
I assumed all training photos were taken at Melville. This is very good information, since I have lost my Father and my source.
I also have a photo of the crew of PT221 identical to this photoshoot.
Some of the members are the same. I hope this picture is helpful.

Guys;
While PT 224 and RON 16 never went to Melville or Brooklyn, RON 17 did! I came across this, here is an portion of a narrative written by QM1 MORRIS LEO TAYLOR of PT 230.
"In New Orleans Squadron 17 was formed with 10 boats (PT 225 to PT 234). We were sent on a shakedown cruise from New Orleans to Tampa, Florida, then around the Florida Keys to Miami where we engaged in additional training while awaiting further assignment. From there we took the inland waterway to New York, still under our own power, anticipating being assigned to relieve a squadron in Italy . We were surprised to see the New York Bay just loaded with rubbers (condoms) floating all over. New York at that time apparently was flushing everything into the bay–what a sight!"
WOW!
what a colorful narrative!
As far as I can tell, this is the only Pacific assigned Higgins Squadron that did go to New York.

Thanks Alex for the info. I have been looking for information on “Rosenthal” for years. Ray Rosenthal was a college engineering professor of mine at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville. He was much respected. He had a certain stern military bearing about him, which you might guess in the 1960’s did not go over well with some of the more liberal students, but I liked him. I can remember in the 60’s hearing a story about Rosie trying to volunteer to return to duty and go to Vietnam, but was rejected due to age.

Sadly, Ray is gone. I am hoping to learn more about the history of RON 16, and Rosenthal. I have ordered a book entitled “PT Squadron #16, World War II Memories “ by Tom Hart , available from Meigs County Historical Society.

Thanks again for the info. This is a great board with a wonderful bunch of people.

The 224 boat had been in Alaska for almost a year. In this picture they apparently are back on the west coast preparing to go to Dreger Harbor. In the enlisted men group my guess is that there were several replacements. The picture includes two S 2/c. That rate would have been attained upon completion of boot camp. There is a third unidentified seaman. Also I would have expected higher rates for a crew that had been at sea for a year.

They sure look like a group of us informal PT Boaters. In addition to the white socks, not one has a hat on correctly. The exec. appears to be totally out of uniform. Frisco was a dress blues town.

Just a few irrelevant observations.

I am the daughter of Capt Warren R DeYoung. I was always told that he skippered PT 498 Ron 34, but in searching through my mother's jewelry I found a charm that has PT224 Ron 16.could this be the PT boat he took to the Philippines during WWII. I don't see him in the picture you posted. I wondered if any of you know anything as to why this PT boat was more meaningful to him? Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen;
Yes that is possible, several European and Mediterranean, Officers and Crew were reassigned to Pacific Squadrons later in the war. CAPT. CAPT. Warren R DeYoung SC, USN was originally the Exec on PT 498(WARMASTER) RON 34, the CO of PT 498 was LT. Al Harris(Harris was also RON 34 Squadron Commander), then LT, William S, Squire USNR became CO of 498, then the your Dad became CO of 498.
He returned to US in Dec 1944. He then joined RON 16 at Mindoro, Philippines, and was CO of PT 224(Tail End) RON 16 until RON 16 was decommissioned on Nov 26, 1945. In 1946 he accepted a regular Navy commission as a Supply Corps Officer. 12 assignments later, he retired as a Captain in Sept 1968.
Hope this helps. Take care,
TED

Hi Mary Ellen,
I have Chief Alvin Piotters' Squadron 16 diary that lists the daily activities of the entire squadron of PTs including the PT224. Your dad is listed as one of the CO's of PT224 at the lists near the end of the text. I had it scanned to an Adobe ".pdf" file and can e-mail it to you if you would like to read it. It mentions the actions of PT224 quite a bit, but it does not specifically name your dad except at the end on the crew list. Tell me your email address and I will send it to you.
