Today, 6 August, marks the day in 1945 that the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The second "A" Bomb dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August ended WWll.

Squadron 22, returned from the war in Europe, was in New York getting refitted for the Pacific. Needlless to say and happy to say RON 22 was spared and this young sailor along the rest of the crews were sent home.

Right or wrong , war or peace. Who am I to judge ? I never made that decision as I was taught to "Salute and shoot."

Thank God for president Harry S. Truman. He made the decision to use the "A" Bombs and saved a lot of lives.

God Bless America

I was on my way back to the Pacific for a second tour when the bomb was dropped. We had been sent home for "R&R", but we all knew it was "R and say goodby to your family". I had actually been given charts of Tokyo harbor with shore batteries identified. We had discussed the problems and chances of getting a speeding PT over the shallow submarine nets or splashing around off-shore installations through unknown wetland. Everyone was sure it would be a one-way trip. So while I have often regretted the horrible loss of life, I know I owe my life to that bombing. God bless those responsible.

WE WERE SERVING CHOW AT THE TIME IT WAS ANNOUNCED OVER THE SPEAKER SYSTEM THAT AN ATOMIC BOMB HAD BEEN DROPPED .PRIOR TO THAT ANNOUNCEMENT WE WERE ALL TALKING,LAUGHING AND THE GENERAL STUFF.WHEN WE HEARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT YOU COULD HEAR A PIN DROP.THERE WAS STUNNED SILENCE.NO CHEERS.NO HORRAHS.NO CONVERSATION.IT WAS EERIE.EVERYONE HAD THEIR OWN THOUGHTS.MOSTLY OF IT WAS GOING TO BE OVER"AND HOME.WE GOT OUR CHOW AND WENT TO SIT DOWN AND EAT.STILL NO TALKING.ALL OF A SUIDDEN YOU COULD HEAR VOICES TALKING,LAUGHING AND YELLING.IT FINNALLY SET IN ON ON WHAT IT MEANT.THERE WAS A LOT OF SLAPPING BACKS AND JUMPING AROUND FOR A FEW MINUTES. THEN IT STARTED TO GET QUIET AGAIN AND WE ALL WENT BACK TO OUR TENTS/BOATS.THERE WAS A QUIETNESS OVER THE WHOLE AREA FOR THE REST OF THE DAY .SO MANY HOUGHTS.

August 6, 1945 I was at Base 17 Samar P.I. I had spent 15 months in the Solomons on board P.T. 242. Then 30 days leave home, got married and 2 months R and R at the Fargo Bldg in Boston. I had been at Base 17 for 3 months gathering supplies, repair parts etc. in preparation for the invasion of Japan. I was due an assignment to another boat any day. I have thanked God many times for President Harry Truman who had the guts to drop the bombs and end the war. Our chances were pretty slim to survive. He probably saved my life and millions more
