"he asked to be dropped from our mailing list in 1979"
Well there's your answer... He didn't want to associate with real men anymore. He started to crack up along time ago.

CDR Henry Brantingham, Annapolis '36 (?) was in Ron 3 in the Philippines, brought his PT35 crew home from Mindanao after some harrowing exploits. Assigned to Ron 9 as X.O. and was my Division Leader on several patrols. Chewed my Skipper's butt for allowing me to man the forward turret of the PT103 without wearing a shirt. I think that was in Area William off the SW coast of Bougainville. It might have been off Vella Lavella. It's been a few years. Ron 9 and Ron 5 worked together at Rendova, Bougainville, Treasury and Green.
Later, he took command of Ron 5 until relieved by LT Ewell at Emirau.
Hank refused to act as Technical Director of the movie, "PT109" so never advanced past Commander. Coincedence?
My wife, kids and I visited with Hank and Elaine at their La Jolla home; went to the beach with them; often met them at Congressman Duncan Hunter's affairs; and he even swore me in for one of my re-enlistments around 1969 or 1970, complete with publicity photos.
In retirement, Hank worked at the University of Californa, San Diego, in the Chemistry Department. Marlene and I attended Hank's funeral at Fort Rosecrans.
Elaine and I talked on the phone many times over her concern as to the direction the nation was taking with Political Correctness. She passed away after we retired to AZ from San Diego.
Hank's favorite exploit of the myriad he experienced was skipper of an icebreaker on a circumnavigation of the world.
We miss them both.

I think the fact that he was a PT guy should not really reflect in this story. It should not reflect on all of your hard work and service. But as a journalist and writer I know that producers and editors look for an angle to every story to get readership and viewership.

I see it as an opportunity to turn a negative into a positive and to enlighten people today of the forgotten heroes of these wooden marvels.
Just because one person decided to do this despicable act should not reflect on the importance of the sacrifices others made for their country.

Gents,
Certainly for the most part the guys that served on PT's were great guys. But we should be careful about putting them up on a pedestal. They are human and have human flaws. I can't imagine what causes so much hate in a person, or maybe it's mental illness. No matter, it should have no relevance in this forum and as Frank said, let's move on.

Thats very interesting Don, thanks for posting it. It appears that PT159 was commanded by LTjg von Brunn from July 13,1945 until the end of the war, Sept 2, 1945, this is about 8 weeks. I wonder if they saw any action in those 2 months he was aboard since the war was practically over by then. WHere is Tawi-Tawi? The deck log specifies that location. Again thanks for the post, it is nice to be able to look at the actual log showing he was on that boat. Jerry

Hello Jerry:
Tawi-Tawi is Located in the Philippine Islands between Mindanao and Malaysia. My uncle served on the seaplane tender USS Half: Moon in and around Tawi-Tawi: in addition to servicing Seaplanes his ship also fueled PT Boats in that area.
