I was hoping someone would have an interior view of the Galley area on a boat. Or, a food, eating, cooking, picture? Its for my military food memory book and would be credited to the photographer.

I have already emailed the Save The PT Boat group for a current shot of their galley but was hoping for some additional.

And if any one would like to share a military food story, good or bad with me feel free to post it here or shoot me an email. thedeckchef@hotmail.com

I just got a story from a wonderful person overseas now that built a pizza oven out of old plane parts.

Thanks everyone - Kent

Here are two US Navy photos. The first is in the galley of a boat at Bougainville, March of 1944. You can credit the photo to National Archives, 80-G-59344.

The next photo is of the mess tent at Green Island. This is also a National Archives photo, 80-G-59358.

Kent,

Great vintage photos posted by G R Powell. To be specific, that first photo is of the interior of a 78' Higgins PT boat.

A photo of (part of) the galley area on (I'm pretty sure) an Elco 80-footer is on page 33 of the book "At Close Quarters - PT Boats in the United States Navy," the official history of the PTs in World War II.

You can also go onto the Fall River PT Boat Museum website, where, among many other good photos, there are several excellent shots of the galley area of the museum's 80' Elco PT.

From the scrapbook of R.J. McConnell, Jr.: "Rafferty, Maloney, Gibson & Riggs in Crew's Quarters of PT 359". The collection has several photographs taken by Jerry Nolan, skipper of the 359. This is probably one of them and it should be credited to Jerry Nolan. My Dad processed his film and made prints in the chart room of the 361 and would do so for crew members of other boats. He would make extra prints for himself. A higher resolution scan is available, contact me at prjm3@msn.com.

The pin-ups on the right side of the picture look l;ike Varga or Elgren artwork when enlarged. Anyone recognize the large pictures on the left?

The photo to the left of the Top Bunk looks like BETTY GRABLE. I am also interested in what sems to be some type of plate (also top left bunk) laying in with the belongings in the holding rack. Looks like a picture of a Donkey or a Horse on it. God only knows what was collected by these guys............

Thanks, Frank and Gary...excellent and perfectly illustrative shots.

I'm not too crazy about that cutout in the hull of the old 617, though...was that really necessary?

Every time I look at these I am actually amazed by the space. I know it was still very limited, but the galley areas seem bigger than I pictured in my mind. I guess good camera work! - Kent
