PT 39, a photo of which appears in Frank's book, is somewhat of an anomaly. Although a first-series (PT 20-44) boat, in this photo and at least one other that was taken during the bond drive parade in NYC, she is fitted with a second-series (PT 45-48, 59-68) streamlined cockpit. I suspect this modification occurred after her return to Melville for training purposes, but have never seen any documentation that addresses this change. Have any of you folks come across any official material on this?

Al,

If you will recall, a number of years ago, I BELIEVE in the late 1970s or the early 1980s, there was a photo of her in the old style newspaper format ALL HANDS newsletter which had a caption that stated the boat was involved in a war-bond drive located on Wall Street in NYC and it gave a year of 1945.

Does this help?

Essentially, no, as I've known this for over 30 years, having seen the original parade photo at Memphis when I was doing a project for the PTBM during the summer of 1978. Thanks for your input, however.

Somewhere along the line I read that the 39 boat had some sort of engineroom explosion, while at Melville, after having returned in August 1944. MTBTRU rebuilt the cabin structure as a late series boat.
Take care,
TED
