Greetings,
Some of you are aware of the tribute build I've been doing for my wife's uncle who served aboard the USS Geneva, APA-86 attack transport. I have completed the last part of the project which is a 7" long model in 1/700 scale. It's not a PT but I thought you might enjoy it. I hope to to be back to my 109 model shortly.

The actual ship

The model as it appears (dark)

Lightened to see better...

We will not forget you Bob.

Beautiful work David, including the water. What did you use for the water?

Hiya Dave-

Fantastic!! I love the attention to detail on the model!!

What kit did you use as a basis for the conversion? I want to say the Jeriamah O'Brian Liberty ship?? Very nice!

Glad you like it.

I made the base by gluing artist textured water color paper to the case base. There's a plastic top that covers everything. Anyway, the texture simulate calm water pretty well. I painted it with artist acrylic paint creating light and dark areas to give it depth. Basically you take the dark blue color and add a something to lighten it up. After you apply this sparingly the darker color is worked in. I topped it off with Liquitex gloss gel which adds to the depth and gives it the look of water. It's pretty simple and looks great with these small scale ships.

The kit itself is from Loose Cannon Productions. It is a Gilliam class attack transport which is the same class as the Geneva. The basic structure is common among all the ships in this class. I created the masts with brass tubing and rods. I added a lot of details which included photoetch 20mm oerlikons on tripods, 40mm twin bofors, and the single 5" open mount deck gun on the stern. I also added spot lights and gun directors from Paper Lab, sailors from Eduard, the flag from Gold Medal Models, and a fair amount of scratch building. Resin kits in the scale are fairly crude and this one was no exception, although better than most. She was painted with White Ensign Models paints and rigged with 8x fly fishing tippet.

It was a lot of fun to build but I have to say I'm not sure I'll build anything else in this scale. It's too tiny for my taste. I have some 1/350 kits I'm looking forward to building.

Now maybe I can get back to my PT boats! The 109 boat is begging to be painted. :-)
Dave

Dave;
It looks great! For the last 6 months of the war my Dad was on the Barnwell APA-132. as an engineering officer.
Take care,
TED
