Steve:
The only boats that I am aware of that came home from the War Zone were Squadron 22 Boats. Most in the Pacific were destroyed in the Philippines from Base 17. Of course, this does not mean that these boats you speak of did not come home. I am just not aware of it. The Varuna did come to the War Zone sometime in july 1945 for the final invasion in the southwest pacific in balikpapan in southeastern borneo. I believe we had only 3 operating Squadrons after the War, with Squadron 4 being one, and I think Squadron 41 was another. I can't remember off hand the third. These of course were in the US.

FRANK:
WHEN I TRANSCRIBED DAD'S JOURNAL OF THE TRIP HOME ABOARD THE VARUNA. HE DESCRIBED DISCHARGING THE PT'S SMOKE GENERATORS ABOARD SHIP AND HOW IT BLEACHED THEIR PAINT. PLUSS HE HAD A LOW QUALITY PHOTO OF PT RADAR MASTS AGAINST A SUNSET. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY WERE OFFLOADED IN SAN DEIGO, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY OR THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD. THEY APPEARED TO BE ELCO 80 FOOTERS. THE ORIGINAL JOURNAL AND PHOTOS ARE NOW LOST AND THATS ONE PHOTO I DIDN'T COPY. JUST CURIOUS.

Steve:

The Squadron 22 Boats were Higgins PT Boats. I really know of no others that ever were shipped back from the War Zone. Hope someone can shed some light.

Steve: I believe a couple of Ron 21 boats were shipped back, as well as those of Ron 36.

Steve,

Could you post that transcribed journal of the Varuna? I'd really like to read it, as PT-171 was tendered by the Varuna, and was in the invasion of balikpapan If you want web space for it, I'd be happy to host it.

Walter: Not sure of the exact date(s) of return to the States, but it would have been early in 1945. The boats were placed out of service in October of '45 and put up for sale in May of 1946.
