Today I got a call from Henry Covington's son. If you recall, I had asked you people to send cards and well wishes to Hank who was in a nursing home in Mobile, Alabama. Some of you responded with cards , pictures and other noteworthy pieces of PT Boat memories.
According to Hank's son it was the greatest thing that happened to Hank in his waining life.He treasured them and had them on the walls of his nursing home room.
Sunday, Hank goes into Hospice care. He is on his last patrol.
His son would like to get Hank's navy records. He doesn't have Hank's service number or any information. He asked me if I could help him. I have my rservice redords, but I don't know what I did to get them. If you tell me how to get the records, I will relay the information to Jerry, Hank's son.

Or if you would like to send the information directly , I can give you Jerry's address If you e-mail me. My e-mail is .....rpullano@stny.rr.com

Jerry asked me to write a letter to Hank and he will read it to him. He asked me to mail it to his home address to be sure that it gets delivered properly. If anyone wants Jerry's address, I can also give you that.

Henry was a motor-mac on the 162 boat in ron 9. He was wounded the night that Erwin Todd was killed. He also was on board the 162 when the 109 was patrolling with it when the Jap collided with the 109. We will soon be losing one of our unsung heroes.

Include Henry in your prayers.

I don't think that he has a computer. I'll phone him and ask. If he does not, perhaps I can open it and print the information and mail it to him.
Thanks for your response

I do not know what your friend desires for funeral or memorial services. I along with many others want a casket flag, rifle squad, and later a VA cemetery marker. Proof of service is needed. With your friend in hospice care it is difficult to know how much time is available. I do not know how long it takes to get records from the Navy Department. There may be a faster way to get the proof of service. For one of my brothers [army] I received proof of his service from our state adjutant general's office. When I returned home after discharge from the navy all service men were encouraged to record there discharge certificate at the county register of deeds. In some states this is the county clerk. These are public records which anyone can access during office hours.

Please excuse me for entering a pet peeve. I read too frequently of the three volleys being referred to as a twenty one gun salute. Only heads of state receive a twenty one gun salute. This is something that all old QMs know.
