Hi there.
I am in contact with a manufacturer of styrene figures in 1/35 scale. This company is very interested in making other figures besides their current offerings. I have told them that we PT boat modellers would like to see some PT boat crewmen for the Pacific theatre of operations.
What would you like to see in a set of PT boat crewmen? Do you prefer combat or relaxed poses? If possible, would you like separate lifr preservers?
What this contact person will want in the future are some good reference photos. Therefore I am asking you if you have favourite photos that a styrene figure manufacturer interested in good detail on their products could use to ascertain the uniforms ( or lack of uniforms) used by PT boat crew in the Pacific theatre of operations.
Cheers from Peter

Greetings,
There's lots of great photos on this site. Mostly we see guys in shorts, skivvies, and sometimes pants. 75% to 80% of the crews have no shirts. They should look real young. And finally they should look like they're starved.
I like the idea of them lounging around. But I've seen a lot of photos of guys at combat stations in their skivvies with live vests and helmets on.
Crew members that are as rough and raw as their boats are perfect for the south pacific.
Let us know what you need, or what they need, and we can supply it.
Dave

Peter Tare Builder,
This is great news for modelers. Here are my ideas;
I think the best approach would be to start with PT crew figures dressed for a combat patrol, very much like the existing Warriors resin figures and the Italeri plastic crew figures. Both the individual Warriors figures and the Italeri set are very expensive.
By "dressed for a combat patrol," I mean the standard chambray shirts and denim dungarees for enlisted, and (khaki) shirts and pants for officers. Helmets, kapok life jackets, pistol belts with holstered .45s and canteens, and boondocker field shoes would complete the look. Some alternate heads wearing Army/Marine Corps O.D. field caps (often worn by PT men of all ranks in the Pacific), would be nice, too, as well as ones wearing an officer's dress cap.
These figures should be in realistic poses of crew at the wheel and in the cockpit, in the gun turrets, manning the various deck guns of the later-model PTs and the aft 20mm or 40mm guns. In particular, torpedomen kneeling or crouched at the ready, mallets in hand for the tubed-model boats or hands reaching for levers for the roll-off racked boats, that could be placed at their battle stations, would be great.
Once the battle-dressed figures were taken care of, crews in various stages of dress and undress -- mostly shorts and no shirts -- for base-moored/docked boats could be produced. There would literally be dozens of poses and clothing combination possiblities for such figures as they worked and maintained, climbed, sat, or lounged around the boats in port.

Hi there.
I heard back from the manufacturer and this is what he said:
"Hello Peter,
Thanks for your interesting idea for the future release.
We are interested in the subject and would be glad if you could
send us any images American PT boat crews in the South Pacific theatre
of operations.
We wonder also if any manufacturer has ever produced the American PT
boat before?
"
So, I now need you to recomend which images I should send him to show what uniforms and positions PT boat crews were in.
Cheers from Peter

Hi
Why not a set of Alamo Scouts figures , to make a Diorama about this PT's kind of missions ? (with a rubber boat too).
It's not exactly crew but I think it's a good complement for a model.
Thanks

Again I would love to see crews as we see them in our photos. Even in combat they're in skivvies with life jackets and helmets. I love the 174 boat with the crewman laying face down on the bow. Look at these guys. You can see their ribs they're so lean. Anyway, to my point here's a collection of crew photos I have....

Hey Pete-
I tend to agree with Frank A. and Dave 110%!!! It's about dang time that the companies producing these figures start leaning towards the war in the South Pacific. I'm all for the combat ready, BUT, in shorts and t shirts and boondockers!!! I also like the relaxed "at ease" look as well.
Why not suggest 3 different sets of figures; one set South Pacific combat zone ready, South Pacific relaxed positions and South Pacific Alamo Scouts. Or to make matters simple, why not combine all three into one big set!! It would be a winner!!
Hey, Pete, hows the R/C PT coming along?
Thanks guys!

Hi there.
I visited the Master Box site and I see that they are working on a three figure set.
One figure is a US sailor with a monkey on his shoulder and the other two figures are US Navy Waves. Here's an image.
How's that for unusual figures?
There *IS* hope for more styrene US sailors in the South Pacific.
Cheers from Peter

Hi there.
I just checked that post and see that the figures are pretty dark. Here's another image but lightened.
Cheers from Peter
