ALLEN;
If you read my post on the first page, I state some of the reasons why the mast would be removed, plain and simple: it was in the way, and it only served one purpose, but at Tulagi as stated by most veterans of RON 2 and RON 3(2), the national ensign was flown on the stern flagstaff. You brought up another excellent reason, it was easier to manuver under the jungle canopy.

As for opening up the can of worms, Thanks Roger!!!! For future reference
any questions concerning PT 109 is opening a can of worms here. David I am with you, if I was there at Tulagi, I would have chucked the thing on the beach, it was useless. As I wrote in my post, from an operators viewpoint, I can just image a gunner going ass over tea kettle after tripping over that thing. As for photos of 109, I still think there are more than 9 photos out there. Such as photos taken by Bryant Larsons crew, Westy Westhlom photos(who by the way, is the big guy on the bow of 109 in the Dec 1 1942 rescue photo. We shall see.
Take care all

Hi David,
What scale is your model? I assumed it is not built from a kit.
More information is welcome.

Victor -

That's the Revell kit with White Ensign Models' photo-etching for that kit.

Hi Victor,
Garth is correct. This is the Revell PT-109 with quite a few modifications. Here's a summary...

- White Ensign Models (WEM) photo etch set was used. I only used some of their pieces which are still brass colored in the photos.
- Reworked the cockpit area with styrene.
- I created a torpedo tube master using parts from the kit, Evergreen styrene, and WEM photo etch. I cast 4 of them in resin which are shown in the pictures.
- There was lots of small details added using brass tubing and styrene.
- The depression rails were soldered from annealed brass and formed.
- The .50's were replaced with Aries resin guns. I like them because they had the flash suppression molded in.
- I scratch built some depth charges from brass tubing and they will be mounted inside the WEM photo etch rack.
- The last thing I've done was add the John Haynes .20mm stand and gun. The base seems just a little over sized but I really like the look. Here's a photo.
- The 37mm on the bow is from WEM as well.
- The bottom has been painted with anti fouling red and I need to rescribe the water line. It's a little too high at the stern.

As soon as I finish the earlier mentioned family project I will finish this one. I've created an Elco cradle from styrene which you can find pictures of in this forum. I'm also making a wood base which will be laser engraved. It will all be covered with a Plexiglas cover to keep her out of harms way.

Hi David,
Wow! What you can do with a Revel kit. I can't believe it. I am impressed with the picture showing the 20 mm gun. Please post the finished
model on message bosrd for all of us to enjoy. I can't wait to see the
50 cal. machine guns install. All this in 1/72 scale. Unbelievable!

Hi David,
I saw the picture of PT 109 with survivors of USS Northhampton on
board. I searched AT CLOSE QUARTERS for the story in vain. I
assumed this happened before Kennedy took over PT 109. Can
someone furnish more information about this incident? Thanks.

Greetings,
Glad you liked the boat. I can't wait to finish her.

If you go to this site you find a very well done story of the 109 boat...

Dave, with all due respect, you might want to reconsider the 20mm mount on your model (the gun looks fine, but that metal pedestal seems much too big/thick)...

Ted, if you can point us to any more published photos of the 109 (either whole, or partial shots such as the JFK-in-the-cockpit ones) in the forward area, or unearth heretofore unseen ones from Bryant Larson or Westholm, you'd become a Permanent PT Boat Legend! I don't know of any others than the ones I've mentioned, and we'd all love to see them...

Hi Drew,
I understand what you're saying. The photo makes it look a little more out of proportion than it really is. When I'm holding it in my hand and comparing it to my photos it looks just about right. It's so much better than the kit piece. I think when you see the finished pictures you'll see that it looks right.

The boat on the left side of this photo, or starboard side of the gray boat in the center, is purported to be PT-109. We'll never be 100% certain but the skipper of this boat said that he was tied up with the 109.

The second photo shows what is believed to be the 109 and another boat that has had green paint added to it as well. Until something better comes along this is the best color reference I've seen. John from WEM said these boats were painted "Tropical Green". I found that mixing Navy Green with some of the WEM Tropical Green gives a very close color. The samples I sprayed on my practice piece look pretty good.

This was posted earlier on another thread if you can find it.
