Warship International (No. 2, 2008) recently published the Soviet report on target tests with the Graf Zeppelin. Of specific interest was the reference to the use of three "ELCO type" torpedo boats in this test, TK-248, TK-425 and TK-503. Two of the three boats (248 and 503) launched torpedos against the Graf Zeppen. The attack by the TK-248 was not successfull, with the torpedo running under the target without exploding. TK-503 scored a successful hit in the region of frame 130. The hit destroyed the hull side bulge, however it did not penetrate the ships armour belt.

Great report for those interested in the Soviet PTs and post war use of the WWII boats.

Interestingly, one Russian language source I have lists TK 425 as former PT 513 (ELCO), TK 248 as former PT 676 (Annapolis Vosper), but does not mention TK 503. Another source equates TK 563 with ex-PT513, TK 248 with ex-PT 416, but has no entry for TK 503. Given the Soviet Navy's penchant for changing pennant numbers, determining actual boat numbers is a real bear (pun intended...).

Al,

Just quoting the report translation found in Warship International. Another issue at hand is the potential that whomever wrote the report may not have know the differece between an ELCO and Vosper or Higgins for that matter.

Drop me a note sometime and let me know how you are doing. It would be nice to hear from you.
