This was sent to me by Henry Covington who was a motormac on the 162 boat. The last I knew of Hank, he was or still is , in a vet hospital in Biloxi Miss. According he cannot talk or communicate. I believe if he had passed away his son would have contacted me. I haven't heard from his son in months.

Hank was injured On July 3, 1943, when Erwin Todd was killed. Todd City in Calvertsville, in Tulagi was named in his honor.He sent me a printout of Todd that is not very good.

The lasting memory I will always of Hank is that he sent me his Knights of the Sea book. To me it is a treasure. I was assigned to the 162 in October 1943.

Notice the report states that approximately only ten seconds passed between the initial sighting of the Amagiri, coming out of the pitch-black night, and its ramming of the 109...

It could have happened to any one of the fifteen PTs out that night. It just happened to have been the 109.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Drew, Do you know if Ferguson Passage and Blackett Strait come together at some point. If they do, then I can tell you what I remember what I was told by the crew on the 162 boat. . If so, it would explain why it was only 10 seconds from sighting and collision.

This is a fantastic example ofthe old adage about war being, Extensive periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror."

So many sailed, flew and marched into harm's way. I give thanks for those that took up the torch.

Shalom Russel.

I just looked at a map and it shows that Ferguson Passage joins Blackett Strait like a T with the top of the T being Blacket Strait.
