Hi people. It's good to be back.

I was looking througjh my boxes of old 1/35 scale figures the other day and found some figutres i think wqould go great with a PTR boat diorama. they arethe old out of production Italeri 1/35 scale Frogmen. I can just imagine these fellows positioned on the deck of a PT boat as if they are being inserted somewhere. The set came with a Zodiac type boat and an outboard motor along with a marine battery.

I am seriously thinking of building my Italeri Elco as a what if post war Israeli boat with these frogmen.

Cheers from Peter

Peter;
If this diorama were to follow a real senario, your diorama would have taken place in and around the waters near Fort Pierce, Fla. I have seen a photo of PT 317(with yellow tipped training torpedoes) RON 4 in these waters, near the UDT Training Center. I believe the PT's did do some limited insertion/extraction training with UDT/OSS combat swimmers during 1943-1944. The boats probaly worked in conjuction with CDR Alan Montgomery's Miami MTB Shakedown Unit, since some RON 4 boats were periodically taske dto go down there.
The only other would be a diorama representing either RON 15, 22, or 29 in Med, and RON 2(2) and RON 30, 34 or 35 in England, pierside prepping for departure or dropping off either OSS or British SOE agents via rubber raft, off the enemy coast.
Good Luck with this project.

P.S. just an added note even though I mention 317, an 80' ELCO and ELCO Squadrons, with my experiance in this type of work, the 78' Higgins was actually the ideal design for this type of work, the spacious open deck area aft actually made the process easier to execute an insertion/extraction, launching/recovering rubber rafts. This is one of the reasons why RON 15 handled most of the OSS work in the MED and RON 2(2) handled all of the OSS work in England.
Oh one more thing, the zodiac you mention, tells me you have the Italeri frogmen kit. the zodiac would be wrong for the time period. The UDT kit from Revell Kit# 5105R4300 UDT Boat, or the Hard to Find boxed set from Atlantic figures of 1/32 scale Sommozzatori, Frogmen with 2 man sub and dinghy. both these have the period correct rubber raft.

Hi there.

When did the Zodiac type boats in the Italeri Frogmens kt first enter service? Were they a civilian boat design and then adapted adapted to military use?

I would love to build a 1/3 scale 77' Elco or a Higgins boat but I o not have t he plans fro one nor do I think I can afford them.

Peter;
UDT/SEALs started using Zodiacs (which is known as CRRC/F470)operationally in the mid to late 1970's. However, they still use the old World War ll style at BUD/S today.
Take care,

Hi Ted and thanks again.

Fortunately I still have that raft from the old Revelll UDT kit and I can use that on my PT boat model with the Italeri frogmen.
