Frank, you just amaze me with the resources you come up with. The covers are a great look into even more of the history behind these amazing machines & their crews.
Adding to the crew assignment/volunteer question I have long been curious about this same thing. My Uncle who was in Ron 33 was 30, or 31 when he entered the PT service(date unknown, but he came home twice on leave & went back) & from the photos I have of his, he was there through the end of the war(he has pictures of the burning of some of their stripped boats_his daughter seems to remember him coming home in November of '45.
Anyway, I've always wondered at 31 years old how he ended up in the PT service, whether he was assigned, or volunteered. I know for a fact he never played college football & was 10-11 years out of high school. I used to go fishing with him as a kid & don't know that he was of the very athletic type. Who knows though, middle to older age has a way of stripping us all of those things.
Wish I had some answers, but still the discussion was interesting.

I graduated from high school with my diploma in one hand and a telegram from the President in the other. I volunteered for PTs or subs. Couldn't pass the swimming test for sub duty but was accepted in the PTs. I was really proud of becoming a member of the elite, but when I got to guadlecanal, I dicsovered many of the new guys were there because they were sentenced to hazardous duty by courts martial. Momentarily demoralized, I soon discovered these guys were really no different than volunteers and many became good friends, one of which I still correspond with.

in 1942 i wenr ro boot camp @ great lakes.from there ,in early 1943 ,i went to cook and baker school at dearborn, michigan.one day, while on duty in the galley i was approached and asked if i would like to volunteer either for pt boat duty or submarine duty.i said NO to both as they were considerred very hazardous duty assignments and a lot of scuttlebutt was being passed around about them.so,eventually i was sent overseaqs to numea ,new caledonia and awaited assignment. we were called to muster one morning and they read my name out to be assigned to pt boat duty.specifically ron 5.much,much later i was informed that i was replacement for the previous cook, who had been killed.i guess ron 5 must have senr out a request for the replacement,.i never did go to melville except for a couple days in transit to overseas duty. earl
SO MUCH FOR VOLUNTEERING BUT I WAS NEVER SORRY ABOUT PT DUTY.IN FACT I WAS PROUD OF IT OFOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

When my Dad went for an assignment, he was told he could have submarines or PT boats. He 'volunteered' for PT boats.

Hi there.

It may not be authentic but I like the mouth and eyes on the left hand boat on the third row from the top. I might paint that on my refurbished 1/32 scale Lindberg RC model.

Cheers from Peter

That would make an awesome project. I can see the Italeri Boat painted with the shark mouth front. More cover's to come.
