Gentlemen;
Currently on ebay is a THEY WERE EXPENDABLE MOVIE MEMORABILIA lot fro sale for a starting $39,000!!!!! 99 b&w photos plus original autographs. It strikes me odd that the only autograph missing is that of Thomas Cameron Mitchell(in the late 1960's of of High Chaparral fame), Ens. Cross(aka: Ens. George E. Cox Jr.USNR). I know Cox went to RON 4 after RON 3, but does anyone know what he did before being promoted to LCDR and getting command of RON 40?
Take care,
TED

I always wish that History would not be sold. I would prefer to see these things in a Museum or on display for people to enjoy. Now along those same lines, I too have sold History, I have not always liked it, and the only reason I have done it was to survive. The items I have in my Exhibit are very precious to me, and true I have sold items to make room for other collections. I can honestly say with my hand to God that I never sold anything to just make a profit. It was always to survive or to purchase something else I really wanted for the Exhibit. I had contacted this man who is selling these items to see if he would be interested in donating them. He was not.
I know that many people who read this forum get angry about items being sold, but try to understand why they do this. For instance the Allan Montgomery items that were on Ebay. I contacted the people sellling the items to see if they would donate them. They were trying to raise money because the wife was ill. I got to know them, and they are very nice and special folks, just trying to survive. In the end, they donated several items to my Exhibit from the Montgomery collection. In the case of the "They were Expendable" items on Ebay, that is just a profit sale all around. So, next time you feel angry about History being sold, ask how come. You might be surprised as to the reasons.

I don't know if this comment was added after your enquiry to the seller, Frank, but he seems to have include in the item description that this interesting collection of items is being offered for sale because "................ My father who is now 88 years old and plans to live to at least 100, unfortunately has spent his way through a large portion of his retirement funds and has decided to sell this collection in it's entirety and intact .............."
While this unique collection would attract people interested in PT boats and movie memorabilia buffs, I am wondering if the high asking price is more a reflection of the sellers need to top up, or more correctly, replace money from his dad's retirement funds rather than an indication of the price that would be paid by collectors of such things.
All the best.

Hi all!
I'm not too sure of the sellers story, as you all know I have been watching ebay for PT item these last couple of years. I remember these items selling last Summer from the original owner for 1200.00. The seller at the time was the son of the woman, who was pregnant during the filming.
As they say, buyer beware!
Bye for now!

With the advent of shows like Appraise It and Antique Road Show, it becomes more difficult to find people willing to donate items. In the case of the "They were Expendable" items, I was not informed as to why the items were being sold. In this day and age everyone thinks that what they have might be worth thousands of dollars and folks are being much more cautious as to what they give away.
I look at it like this. "Its only worth that much providing you have a buyer willing to pay that amount". I am sure that each one of us at one time has sold something they did not want to because they had no choice. Passing judgement on others who do so, withoout knwing the facts, then talking behind their backs for selling Historical items is so very wrong. I have been accused of doing this. I must say again that any item I ever sold was due to
1. No Chioce
2. To raise money to purchase a collection or rare piece
My record of the work I do to promote the PT BOAT SERVICE and EDUCATE those who know little about them is well documented. I suggest if you have anything to say to my face, then be a man, call me or meet me and I will be most happy to discuss my reasons. I hate nothing more then a back stabber. Sorry to list a negative post. I guess it is something I had to say.
